Hi All
Does anybody know what the genuine brake pads are for the disco 3 my wife put the car in for a service while i was away and the service guy told her the pads were worn he charger $680 to replace them he used ferodo brake pads. someone in work said these were a fairly cheep brand just want to know if the land rover is trying to rip me off again these people charge outrages prices for everything

The stealer definately ripping you off. Just go to any petrol service station and they can change the brake pad for you fairly cheap. More than half price u paying the stealer now.

and how long have you had your D3 for
mick, was it just pads or rotors aswell. dont leave a witness.....................put your foot down.

Hi Paul,
The OE Landrover pads are Ferodo.
It's a bit a an odd one this, when these manufacturers make pads for OE use, they tend to be different than their aftermarket range, In the Aftermarket, I think Ferodo do 3 ranges of pads, economy, std & premium, all with differing prices. It is most likely the Genuine Landrover Ferodo pads are different again, mostly to do with friction material & sound suppression on the backings.

it's ludicrous as Land Rover have 2 purchase departments...one for new build one for aftermarket
New build and aftermarket could be different suppliers but normally the same... You want it for how much !!!!!

I changed my own pads and have just looked at the old ones I took out, 'Ferodo' is printed on the rear. So my D3 was factory fitted from new with Ferodo.

Hi Mick,
Just had all 4 sets of pads done on my car at LR dealer in Melbourne. Charged $135 for fronts and $113.15 for rear plus $119.50 x 2 for labour (all ex-gst), so all up cost $536. Don't forget that they have to change the pad wear sensor's as well.

Just changed my rear pads. The replacements were $143. Same ferodo part numbers as the originals. They went 68,000km so I'm quite happy. Rotors in good condition, wearing but not in need of machining.

Hello everyone,
I never tire (pun intended) of reading about brake pads....
Just had my first 6 month serivce (9k's on odo). While waiting to pick up the car, there was this guy who was ranting and raving to the service manager about his brake pads - apparently he was told that they needed replacing and he had only done about 10k's on them.
The guy attending me said that my pads were fine. He also mentioned that they don't machine the discs anymore - apparently the discs are not thick enough to be machined. Don't know if this is the dealer playing proctologist again or if it is true.
Not that it matters - I intend to change the pads and discs myself.

interesting story,
Disk life can be quite varied depending on how and where you drive. The disks have enough thickness for a few sets of pads and a couple of light skims. If you run the pads right down then one good machining and a couple of more sets of pads is all you will get. If you work them hard and heat them up to the point they warp then again one good machining. I expect 200K from my disks, at least. Only had one other vehicl that needed disks earlier and I drove that very hard and towed heavy weight, eventually warped front disks a second time at only 125K.

Just changed my brake pads, front and rear. They were the the original p/n as the dealer said they had tried other after market ones but they didn't give good results. The price was cheaper than above. I also bought filters and they were slightly cheaper than the prices quoted from the Alice Springs dealer. So we have another dealer with proper pricing. S White, TdV6, air suspension, 110ltr Long Range tank, Kaymar wheel carrier, aux. battery, adjustable cargo barrier, LR snorkel(waterproofed), reversing and front camera, Cooper tyres and tyre sensors, Codan NGT. VKS-737 Sierra2367

Ian - I take it you don't do much city stop-start driving!
When mine was in for 36,000km service, my dealer replaced the pads "as they would not have lasted to the 48,000km service." That doesn't bode well for the discs.
I have had luck changing to after-market slotted discs in my other cars. Eg. My XR6 doing same trips as D3 is now doing had discs changed at 50,000km and 100,000km. Changed them to DBA slotted at 100,000km and the brake pedal feel is much better - more progressive, rather than nothing or "eyeballs against windscreen"!
Has anyone heard about using slotted, or slotted & drilled rotors in a D3 to improve brake performance? I have seen the threads on using V8 discs in non-V8 models - but that then ties you to minimum of 18" wheels.
