G'day JND72,
For around 75 bucks, count in me! Though I'm only got to this thread about 5 minutes ago and don't really know what I am buying exactly
But I am all for swapping out the base head unit - what a woeful piece of
I was just about to take a blowtorch (figuratively speaking) to the dash to install my Car PC but if this kit allows me to replace the base unit with a double din based computer - then this is certainly the way to go.
Cheers.

Been following up all the links given in this thread.
Nearly fell out of my chair (again ) when I got to the CarAudioPlus website. The cost of the wiring harness is listed as 11,748.83 pounds. That's about $24,476.73 aussie dollars
For that price, I'll go build myself a top notch home theatre at home, complete with 150" screen, a gazillion speakers and subwoofers and rounded off with electronic massage recliners thank you
The other website's harness was a teeny bit more reasonable at USD 54.00
Cheers

Good idea, noidea!
We will definitely need the harness.
Been doing a bit of research last evening on what can be put in a double din chassis. Found lots of interesting possibilities.
If one wants to do it on the cheap, then one of those 'hybrid' WinCE based units are the way to go. You get GPS, TV, DVD, AM/FM, Bluetooth, the usual multimedia mp3 and mp4 stuff and a 6.5 or 7 inch touch screen for around $300 - $500 aussie. Some even throw in a reverse camera (all units do have facilities to hook in a reverse camera). Most units have outputs to allow you to hook up additional monitors for rear passengers. You can get a double 7" monitor set from Strathfield for around $300 to attach to the rear of the front seat headrests. You can even load Oziexplorer for WinCE on it for off-road navigation.
These functions are pretty much what I had set up in the full on Car PC anyway.
I also found out that a double din Car PC costs almost $3000 . Scratch this route.....
There really is not a lot of additional practical functionality of a full on Car PC over the WinCE unit above. If I need full on computing power, I'll bring my 17" laptop. It is not much fun working on a spreadhseet using a 7 inch monitor - trust me, I've tried it
Because most (if not all) of these WinCE units are made in China, I wonder about the software (re the user interface and stability) that drives these units. Does anybody have any experience with these things?
For those who already have a PC or laptop, thesre is the option of putting in a unit that only contains a DVD player, radio and 7" screen. You just plug your existing PC or laptop in (VGA and USB connection required) and off you go. The only problem is that these 'stripped down units costs twice as much as the WinCE units above - I guess demand is not there for this type of configuration.
For the hardcore caffeine junkies, one other configuration is to get a one-din DVD player for the upper half and a one-din slide out coffee cup holder for the lower half
For the greenies and nature lovers, there is always the option of leaving the space empty and put a small flower vase there. The artistic can sew some pretty lacy curtains to dress up the opening. I'm sure we can go one up on those Beetle drivers and their yellow daisy.......
For the half blind and punctuality freaks, you can put in a full size alarm clock in that double din space - no more squinting for the time and no more being late. Isn't there an 'analogue clock' thread somewhere in this forum? I reckon there is enough room for a smallish cuckoo clock in there.
Cheers

Count me in. I havent been on the forum for a while so I dont really know what I am buying either. Can someone clarify this for me as I assume that (maybe wrong) that once I have this kit then I can install (or get someone else to do it) a multi-media unit to replace the base unit.
If thats the case I am prepared to atke a punt and go for the group buy
Cheers

This is a facial kits which cover the 2 side of the hole once you fit in a double-din unit. This is only for tidy up the look if you put a double-din unit.
I will try to find the wiring hardness and arrange a GB soon. if wiring hardness is not available then we could always tap the wiring to the original plug for the wiring need of the double-din unit.

Noidea, Get a photo of the actual unit fro m kenwood before ordering.
Also we could do a group buy for a complete kit?
1. Facia Kit
2. Wiring harness
3. Steering wheel contrl adaptor module. (wiggs gave link for this in one of the posts)
The greater the number the greaterthe the discount. We should do a group buy for the whole forum i.e. a price before postage ex uk. with the greater numbers we should get a good discount on it.
Maybe a post in 'general or 'electronics'. Getting there is half the fun

This is the steering wheel remote module:
http://www.pac-audio.com/swixprogramming/swixprogramming.asp
Instruction for SWI-PS
http://www.pac-audio.com/instructions/SWI-PS.pdf
The SWI-PS is Compatible With:
Pioneer, Sony, Advent, Jensen and Dual Models with a Wired Remote Input
The SWI-JACK is Compatible With:
JVC, Alpine, Clarion, Kenwood and Blaupunkt Models with a Wired Remote Input
(Please check ur head unit accept wired remote input or not)
The SWI-PS & SWI-JACK would be abt AUD70 shipped to Australia. I find that we cannot really get cheaper by Group buy so i would suggest that we get that individually from ebay US.
I'm still trying to get the reply from the wiring hardness supplier. A few of them will not ship to Australia. We hope the fellow England people can help us Aussie to buy it in bulk and ship over to us. Anyone can help us. Too bad being down under

Okay, the wiring harness is not really important because we can tap the wiring into the original plug. Although it is not tidy but who can see at the back.
So all we need is the Kenwood facial and the steering remote module. As mentioned before that steering remote module can be bought from ebay US therefore i think that it is more efficient and cheaper to buy from ebay individually.
So this group buy all we need is the Kenwood Facial. I think the dateline we make it next week so that we can order it asap.
