Roof Rack Noise

Guys,

I just got a rackmaster 1.6m rack put on at opposite lock + a set of 245/70R17 Cooper STT. They look great.

On the way home I noticed the tyre rumble, more than I expected, BUT I then got onto the motorway coming home and the noise from the rack at 100km/hr is deafening. It gave me a headache. Can't imaging how I am going to do 3000km corner country trip with that noise.

Solutions ?

Does it get quieter when it's full ? Plan to put tyre, gas bottle and roof bag up there.
Should I put a sheet of ply on it to reduce the noise ?
Will an air deflector help ?

HELP !!

Bye,
Scott

Scott, I definitely remember reading on this site where guys in UK made their LR Expo rack much quieter by putting a "skirt" at the front between the roof and the rack (to make a smooth airflow over the rack....not sure what the OL rack looks like but this might be an option; search on this site for Expedition rack and you'll probably find the thread I'm talking about; I'll look now too.

I think that it's gotta be rigid in its own right - you screw it into the rack at the front and then fold it back onto the roof and it's simply taped to the roof - I gathered that from the photos atleast Rolling Eyes

I can only recommend this neoprene skirt solution I think the stuff AndrewS got me was about 3-4mm thick, so stiff but flexible Whistle - fitted before we did a 2k mile trip and it really made a huge difference.

Scott, did you fit the deflector that comes with the rack?? It goes on underneath at the front.

I have a rackmaster (which is a re-labelled frontrunner) and it makes some wind noise but it's definitely not deafening.

Also there is a thread in the African section about making sure the rack is level. If it's not level then the noise is very bad.

Jamo,

I had opposite lock install the rack and tyres late yesterday, and as far as I can see there is a deflector installed under the rack near the front, but it's not the full width of the rack.

But you know, after driving it again this morning I wonder if it's actually the STT's creating the noise -- the problem with doing more than 1 thing at a time.

I think I will remove the rack and see if it's the tyres.

I can't see how I can drive 3000km for our trip with the noise -- be it tyres or rack.

I have never had mud tyres, but if my suspicion turns out correct, I now wish I had gone Mickey ATZ ... expensive mistake.

How noisy do you find your MT over your HT ?

Bye,
Scott

I personally didn't think the STT's were that noisey. The pattern does generate more road noise but not anywhere near as much as my old Tradesman roof rack.

Scott, I can tell you if I drove in a cross wind the Tradesman rack can make a lot of noise. Maybe the same with the Rackmaster.

Scott,

If it's your tyres, then it's time to have the wheel alignment checked.

When even one of my wheel was out, the noise from the STT's went up exponentially!

As soon as I'd had the alignment done, the noise dropped considerably.

Thanks guys, very helpful advice.
I will take the rack off tomorrow and prove if rack or tyres.

If tyres, I will get wheel alignment since it's in for service on Monday.

Well, with the rack off, I can say it's definitely more the tyres than the rack.

The Cooper STT's howl from 45-55km/h and then 95-115km/h. They are bearable outside those speeds. Road surface makes a huge difference too. The M4 in Sydney has been resurfaced with super smooth tar, and is VERY noisy. Which is odd, it is the quietest road with my road tyres ... go figure.

So I guess I will have to sit on 120km/h on our trip till we get to the dirt ...

I will get the alignment checked on Monday as Jamo suggested ... especially since I noticed today that going around left curves at 90km/h was quieter than straight ahead and right hand curves. Wonder if that's an alignment issue.
