I get some transmission shunt when taking up the drive after slowing down. Its a noticeable but not too loud clunk, gets a little more noticeable after a long drive, I assume cos the diff oils are hot.
Just wanted to know whether this is normal or whether I can expect a diff to fail.
Anyone else have this or offer a view on whether serious? Mine's done 67k.

Yes - I just never knew it was called transmission shunt - perfect.
Dealer says mine's (47k) within tolerances, which doesn't help very much. Paul

Their tolerances from a warranty management perspective or yours from the perspective of a mildly annoyed purchaser of a premium vehicle? Going, going...... Gone!

Well at least I'm not alone. That sort of helps!?
I can imagine it might be a costly warranty claim to resolve too.
Yes its annoying in an otherwise refined vehicle. But suspect all 4x4s suffer this to some degree as so may components each adding free play.
I'm turning the stereo up in future....

I have moaned about the "shunt" almost from day one. Car now approaching 3rd birthday. I became such a pain in the butt that LR sent down a Field Engineer to the local dealer. They had the car for a day and at the end I was told that the play (shunt) was acceptable and within manufacturing tolerances. I find that with the caravan hooked on the "shunt" is even worse. I am told "Surprise surprise-- "They all do that" or as one techie sen to me "I can get any D3 to "shunt". It is down to play in the transmission but I still do not like it.

I had this problem, and the dealer replaced a prop shaft. This did not cure the problem. I went back after a week complaining that the propshaft replacement has not fixed the problem. They contacted land rover for advice, and they said that there was a gearbox software update available to combat the shunt. This has been applied, and although the shunt has not completely gone, it is 95% better than it was.

Thanks Sparkie. I'd not heard of that as a fix. I'll ask the dealer about it.
