Like you have just written DD, there are vets and there are vets. Some are good some are crap. As a rule of thumb with this sort of injury a vet that deals with lots of this type of injury is a better bet. That doesn't necessarily mean a speacialist. When my dogs for instance have injured tendons I take them to a vet in Oxford,(Andrew Bartholomew) who isn't a specialist but has a tremendous amount of experience of this injury as he is the vet at the local greyhound track. They are masters of knowing what actually works rather than what they have been taught from a book. Back problems are likely to be this sort of injury.
My wife is a veterinary nurse and we have many friends who are what TV might now call "super vets" but for this sort of injury we would go to Andrew Bartholomew! DS3 TDV6 HSE

I certainly hope that Poppy will recover well from this. Just wanted to second the concept of using a greyhound doctor to get an opinion. Our Vizsla was a bit out of whack recently and the breeder sent us to her greyhound guy. After a few "adjustments", Jed was up to his usual self again.
Our vet had admittedly done what he could for Jed and he was glad we were able to find a greyhound doctor. Even with the huge amount of racing here in melbourne, there are only a couple of these guys around.
Good luck Poppy! Picked up my new MY08 Stornaway TDV6 SE late Feb. FULLY STOKED! Thanks in advance for all the advice/tips you guys have shared on here!!!!!!!!!!!!

Update :
We think she must have done it a long time ago. as soon as the Anesthetic wore off she was back to her normal self tearing around the garden and crashing through things. The Vet agrees and thinks maybe her not being able to open her mouth was down to some kind of infection that has now cleared up. The disc issue may just have been spotted by accident.
Now we know about her injury as long as we use a harness instead of a collar she shouldnt have any problems untill she is much older Duncan
