| DiscoPoppy has a prolapsed Disc |
|
We had to take Poppy to the vets on Friday cos she was squeeling every time she opened her mouth. They gave her an anesthetic and took an x-ray. It seem that she has prolapsed a Disc at the top of her back which has then calcified so it will never return to normal

Shes on Pain killers at the moment.
Best Case : the pain killers will help loosen movement and as long as we dont use a collar with her lead she should be OK
Worst Case : she will either be on pain killers all the time and/or may need an Op which presents other risks.
We are a bit worried Duncan

Sorry to hear that, having had our Springer in the vet recently I can recommend Fitzpatrick Referalls who specialise in this type of problem. In fact there was a dog in the waiting room for a check up who had a disc problem and they had operated on it 2 weeks earlier. Despite not being allowed to run around for another 4 weeks, he was pretty much fully fit again.
You have to get a referall from your vet, but they are good. It also helps to have insurance as it isn't cheap. They are www.fitzpatrickreferalls.co.uk.
Hope it all gets sorted.

thanks guys,
I'll check out the referalls place, thanks.
She must not run around and cant go on walks at the moment, we have to keep her quite and still. but she is so lively that its proving difficult. She has got over the anesthetic now but is just building up energy and want to play all the time. We are having a real challenge trying to keep her calm. Duncan

Now that's a definition of a frustrated dog.....
Having met Poppy once I really hope she is fixed soon and doesn't suffer too much until they get her sorted. Rob Smith

Sorry to hear about this -- it doesn't sound pleasant. I hope Poppy isn't too unhappy.
Something looked a bit odd with Countrywide's link so I checked it. You need http://www.fitzpatrickreferrals.co.uk/ instead. Mark...

Try a Chiropracter, or if you have a greyhound track nearby their vets will be pretty good with this type of injury, much better than your dog and cat vet. DS3 TDV6 HSE

Thanks for the info.
The Vet we go to is actually the hospital for the North Bristol area so they have all the surgeons etc there. If it wasnt for the surgeon walking past and having a quick glance at the x-rays the normal vet wouldnt have spotted it
she seems to have improved a bit today. She can open her mouth wide and it doesnt seem to hurt so maybe things are getting better, finger crossed Duncan
