I was just having a similar discussion recently on the all-volunteer rescue squads around here (supported by donations). My view on it is less big government involvement, less taxes, more community...helping our neighbors when in need and supporting services at a local level...in an ideal world anyway  I'm not so good at giving advice...may I offer you a sarcastic comment instead?
