Was she English if so she has little excuse, however having said that I believe that a vast majority of those that live in London don't think there is a world out side of it. I personally can't stand the place. I'm not as good as I once was........but I'm as good once as I ever was.

She was indeed an English Londoner. I grew up in London (Chiswick) and I have to say I would not move back there, not because of the people but just because I like the countryside now and fresh air.

Totally agree, it's not the people, it's the way of life, I just don't like cities in general. Like you I much prefer the sticks plus we can moan more about the complete lack of public transport I'm not as good as I once was........but I'm as good once as I ever was.

So was Jade Goode - and look at her knowlege of the UK....
I too grew up in London, but with Scott's mother and a Cornish father I stood little chance of NOT knowing where various bits of the UK are in realtionship to each other.
Of course modern (miss)education doesn't help kids learn the basics of UK geography, or how to read a map.
For me the best feature of London is that observed in the rear view mirror of a D3...... Rob Smith

I think they were curious to know if there was something outside the borders of London or if the world ended and you just fell off the edge of the earth .
To be honest I have no idea, they handed me a card saying they used the information to understand people's travel patterns. I did think about asking for my £8 congestion charge back in return for the info as it was only fair I thought.
Still at least a traffic warden didn't give me a ticket while I stopped and answered the questions, I think they missed a trick there.

Do they have a legal right to this information, what would they have done if you had refused to answer their questions claiming that you were unable to disclose the information due to the data protection act I'm not as good as I once was........but I'm as good once as I ever was.

Why should the education system teach a kid how to read a map - what about the bloody parents doing it?
I have to laugh that we say kids aren't taught this and that anymore; if the school hasn't taught it then the parents should if they see a hole in their overall education. DS3 TDV6 HSE

Yes, but given the holes in education these days parents woukd have to give up their jobs to teach all the missing bits. I seem to remember reading OS maps in geography at school, and that was before the contour lines became metric.

Parents are part of the education system for a child, not the totallity of it, but part of it. Some things are best taught by parents (or probably even better LEARNT from them).
Others are best taught in a more organised setting, which includes the class room, the playgroup, youth club.
To say "its the school's/parent's/etc" fault is to try to pass the buck for what is actully a group responsibilty.
Having worked in a youth club, and being able to read maps to a fair level, I was able to help some youngsters to read maps, indeed some of them have reached a competance that is a long way a ahead of mine and now navigate around the world on their own. Rob Smith

To be fair the lady in question was in her 60's, we had an empire when she was at school so most of it has probably changed.
