Surely then you don't need to have yours checked as you couldn't clone something which didn't exist yet.

Did the DVLA confirm the engine number was the same as well. You could HPI the other reg number and see what comes up.
How did the finance company log the finance against your car if the reg numbers are different, is it the VIN number as I guess this can't be changed with a private plate.

It will be the VIN. Plates can change regularly, but the VIN can only be changed under exceptional and rare circumstances. Going, going...... Gone!

What happens is......
A disco is stolen and plates are cloned with a legitimate vehicle of the same colour, model etc.
Vin plates can be made and its big business as the thief gets £500 for the stolen car and the seller sells it for £20k.
So the new buyer applies for a log book and DVLA send him one. Apparently this can happen upto 3 times before DVLA write to the registered keeper to check if they have sold the vehicle.
New keeper gets a logbook same as you have your log book only the vehicle is no longer registered to you. This can go on for years until someone checks or the original owner notices he is not getting any tax reminders.
Or the original owner attempts to re-tax his vehicle on line which fails because the log book V5 reference is wrong.
I know of a BMW M5 that was 12 months old and even the dealer didn't know until they connected the computer to download the fault info which gave the chassis number which did not match the cloned vehicle chassis number. So the dealer called the Police.
So someone could actually buy a cloned vehicle from a dealer and take out finance on it as everyone assumes its the correct vehicle.
Or someone who knows the vehicle is suspect could take out finance on it from a dodgy dealer never intending to pay it, but the dealer has the £20k and the Finance company have a cloned vehicle.
The list goes on......
Of course this is the worse case, it could all be a mistake. The important thing is you purchased your car new from a dealer so are very unlikely to have the cloned vehicle. Even buying secondhand from a LR dealer I'm sure they would just give you your money back for their failure to check the vehicle out properly.

Does this mean that I'm 'in the clear' then? The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom
