There was a program on ITV the other night about car crime where a guy bought a D3 from a chap in St. Neots. Car was HPI checked and was checked using a text service and both said the car was legit, cops said otherwise as it had been stolen. Poor guy had to pay the insurance company to get it back Sad Big Cry

I saw that programme, why I couldn't quite believe my ears and eyes....however I have had mine 2 years....finance apparently only taken out 3 weeks ago, confirmed by dealer speaking direct to finance company listed in the HPI!!

it was only fluke I decided to drop by and speak to the sales guys. If i hadn't used this dealer for 12 years I am sure they would have thought I was pulling a fast one.

Not happy

Have to wait till Monday to clear it up. Finance company was cagey to the dealer as you would expect and HPI don't work weekends.

Really need copies of the documentation to taske to the police, all finance company would admit was confirming the HPI details and to say it wasn't in my name.

I am hoping it is a huge adminstrative cock up but I am a bit nervous.................

still it saved me from buying a new car today!!!!!!! Rolling Eyes

HPI and finance house details only as good as the person keying the details. Did they check the VIN or just the reg?

I'd go with the statement "only as good as the data being keyed in" - I had great problems a few years back when an error was made on the entry of a previous vehicle, it took lots of attempts to get all the details correct, sometimes my name was right, sometimes the vehicle type was right, sometimes my address was right, and it just rolled on. It would appear that the longer the saga went on the more errors were added, which is not much fun.

Then there's identity fraud, given that the VIN is visible from outside its very easy to marry reg plate to VIN, then a bit fi a dig and you can tie the "new" and "old" reg's together and grab a load of dosh on a car that isn't your's. Now that is scary.

Not half as scary sitting in the office as sitting talking to Plod by the roadside, who after a few calls to "his boss" said something along the lines "When they do start to make errors they just get worse".

But in this case I think its not a DVLA/VOSA error, but a scrote deciding to get some money attack, devious to put it mildly - I think if I found out who'd done that I'd want to see them persecuted to the fullest extent. They probably thought "Ah, this guy won't notice if we blag a few Łk on his car". Just makes you ponder how many other honest folk are being ripped off, credit ratings shot to bits etc. in a similar manner?

Generally HPI is OK, but asking the police is best.

However, neither prevents following situation occurring:

Couple live together, female owns car. They split up and male leaves, taking car which he sells. Female reports car stolen when she eventually realises male isn't going to give it back.

Police update car as stolen after its been bought by an elderly lady.

Elderly lady is driving car when she gets stopped in ANPR roadside check.

Of course, she isn't arrested as she is the innocent purchaser of a stolen vehicle. But she looses any entitlement to the vehicle which must be returned to the female (or her insurance co if paid out).
