Hi Skywriter,
I think that is a question that is impossible for anyone but yourself to answer.
I have a manual and love it. But others (lazy ) wouldn't consider anything but an automatic.
Best of Luck with your decision,
Peter

I wonder if those that post on the choice, if they could also give a quick insight into why they chose one type over the other . thus passing on their experiences unless it is from being lazy
The thing that springs to mind reading through other threads, maybe its a good idea to list what you want from the vehicle (MPG, 'L/100km', ease of drive, control over gears, etc) and that will give the answer for your situation/purchase
BUT it's a 4x4Skoda

I went auto because you don't get the HSE here in manual , but in all honesty I think I now prefer auto .

Auto for a D3
Reasons:-
1. On Motorway traffic, it's a dream to drive effortlessly and smoothly (not saying you can't in a manual, it's just much more serene in an auto)
2. Off road for novices and experienced alike, Auto is very very good (not saying a manual isn't, it's just ,uch more civilised in an auto)
3. Traffic Jams, need I say more, Brake or Accelerate, no burnt out clutch as you move smothly in the traffic (you can move smoothly in a manual, it's just more effort!)
4. SWMBO - It's a big car, so the less things she has to think about when driving MY car, the better!!!!!
If I were you, I'd take one of each for a couple of hours & see which one you prefer.
I fall into the lazy auto driver camp (don't get excited NoDo$h...) it's just such a relaxed drive in all conditions.
Fuel economy is worse if you're putting your foot down all the time, but what's the different between 26 and 30....? (yes, i know, the answer is 4...!)
Test them, then decide, but my vote is Auto for a beast this size & weight TDV6 HSE Black, Black Wheels /MTR's(in the shed!), Black RRS front/rear LR badge (tbf) Black Leather, Black Glass, Black TowB, Shiny Tasmods, Dull Mantec, White (& Orange) Reflective D3 Sticker, Black steering wheel badge, black air intake. Optima & Traxide dual battery setup.
Need black RRS wheel centre caps.
Now with added Engel.....
We D3, therefore we are..........

I had never had an auto and was adamant about getting a manual D3, until I tried a manual and auto back to back. The auto is just effortless, easy driving both on and off road, for the reasons Bodsy posted.
So I changed my mind and bought an auto.
Can I go for a poo now Ken? If you are annoying me, just remember it takes 42 muscles for me to frown and only 4 to extend my middle finger, and I'm lazy so don't be offended.

Auto, especially in town where stop/start driving is always a pain in manual and where the slow traffic crawl is effortless in auto. I have also found it fine on the open road too. I maybe lazy but I couldn't imagine driving this in manual - always need a hand free to wave to other D3 drivers.

It's a personal choice. I have a manual, but have driven auto. I like both.
I agree with all of Bodseys points above, driving on the motorway and in traffic is a dream with the auto box. From my limited time driving an auto D3(1 day) I found the auto box to be superb, very little delay in kick down.
I have experience with 2 Mercedes autos and found the gearboxes on these to be rubbish - based on that experience I would never buy another auto. I cannot find fult with the D3 auto though and may well get one next time.
It's a trade off between ease of driving and fuel consumption. The purists will tell you to buy a manual!

Have always driven a manual and always swore blind I'd never change, I took an auto D3 out for a day and have never looked back.
Seamless auto box makes driving a pleasure and with the TC upgrade very rapid when I need it to be, it all contributes to the permergrin
Downside is less mpg around town, but who wants to drive in town anyway
Try the auto before you commit, you'll love it TDV6 HSE - Light Guards - White Reflective Sticker & that something extra
No Jetboil (yet) Edit: Jetboil now arrived, whoopie!!
