Tyre Pressure Monitoring System

I was one of the group buyers of the aftermarket TPMS; interestingsly on day 3 of our recent Red Centre trip (after a big day on the Oodnadatta track and Dalhousie Springs rd) the right rear wireless reader on the valve woke up ( Exclamation ) one morning and decided to spend the next 7 days exactly 4 psi below the actual pressure (as checked daily with a manual tyre pressure guage (actually triple checked with a number of guages!).

Then on day 12 or thereabouts it woke up feeling better and was back to normal...so what happended? dust / dirt in wireless attachment? maybe. I took it off the valve and let it bounce around the centre console for a few days in between so maybe it dislodged some minute dust particles..I dont know...but its fine now.

ANyone else have any probs?

cheers

Chris

Chris
No problems so far but heading to Stockton Beach on Saturday which will test it out.

Must have been a great trip. It is 12 months to the week since I started out from Sydney to do the Gibb. I checked my little black book and most I paid for diesel was $1.96 at Mt Barnett and least $1.22 in Dubbo Ahhh

Hi BP,
My only issue is that the rear left sensor seems to cause a slow leak (takes 2-3 weeks to drop 4-5 psi)from between the tyre stem and the sensor thread. I have yet to use soap to see any bubbles appear or threadlocker to try to seal it.
 regards
Peter

Does the system have a sleep mode? I don’t pay a lot of attention to it, but every now and then it beeps, when I look at it, the screen light is on, all the pressures and temps are fine.

I am never sure if the unit was off or on? before it beeps
Trust me, what could go wrong?

Yes,
it seems to power down (screen goes blank) after a period of time and then reactivates on opening the door (I have the 12V lead plugged in permanently to the cigarette lighter.

Further to my post above:
After leaving the car for 'a while' (certainly an hour or more) the display is blank. Unlocking the door does not activate it BUT opening the door does!? Now the ONLY connection I have between the dispaly and the car is the 12V power lead from the display to the cigarette lighter in the console. Interestingly this plug in power adapter has a big red 'on/off' button with a big red light that glows when the current is flowing (IE key in ignition to Position 1).
SO, WHY or HOW does the display sense that the door has been opened if there is NO change in current to it??

DN here is a link to the product information:

Thanks for the link Peter

More than likely it senses the slight movement of the vehicle when the door is opened - I have a GSP unit like that - it goes into sleep mode, but the slightly movement of the car and it wakes up.

all 4 "died" on Birdsville Track - and also get slow leak fron one...been meaning to get around to talking to supplier! IMO not suited for "off road" applications.

I run my TPMS on batteries, maybe when the sensors don't detect any pressure change in the tyres ie. 4wd is parked/stopped, it turns it self off, when you open the door or drive off it senses change in the tyre pressure and it turns on?
Trust me, what could go wrong?

That's interesting, I have just done the Adelaide to Cape York and had the Tyre Dogs on the STT's. There was a LOT of dust and corrugations and plenty of water crossing and they survived all intact. garryc

Tristan,
Have you kept the locking washer and nut on? That caused a leak on one of my tyres so took them off and works fine. Smile

Thanks Wayne,

I might check that on the sensors that still work. 2 of them actually had the battery holder break off inside the sensor - so I dont think that I can do much to save them Shocked

I still need to get around to contacting the supplier - and soon else I will end up with a $300 pup!

Hopefully, with other comments about reliability, the issues with mine are just "Friday build" and the replacements will be more reliable Confused
