| What design enhancements would you make? |
|
Whilst waiting at the airport the other day I got thinking about what enhancements I would make to the D3 if I was on the design team. (as you can now tell I was getting bored). I wasn’t necessarily thinking about the standard type modifications that could be done via optional extras but more of the factory/build changes I would like to see on future cars.
Surprisingly the only two I came up with were:-
Opening 3rd row rear windows; where the very rear part of the window would open out.
Automatic closing of the front and second row windows when you set the alarm. I guess if I had a sun roof that should automatically close as well.
What modifications would you make if you were given the chance? Ian

Firstly Paint them all silver!
I don't like the idea of automatic closing of windows when you lock the car. I would prefer an option on the remote that allows you to close the windows (in case you want to leave a dog or walrus inside on a hot day)
I would like the wing mirrors to fold when you locked it though. I keep forgetting to do it when I get out. Sharks: Natures way of telling surfers to get a job

Larger front seat bases with more thigh support.
(I'm only 74kg ,but there's not enough room for long distance comfort. I do miss that from
the LC100) .

It's been said it a million times - but I'll say it again. The speed at which the car drops from off road to normal height . LR listen up

It's not the time it takes, it's the trigger road speed that's the problem (set too low for the rutted, crested roads of the veldt and the outback) Going, going...... Gone!

Thinking about this - I agree with you. In fact one of the reason for my third row opening windows was for the old pooch.
I also agree with the automatic folding mirrors - its passed my mind in the past. Ian

I'd like to see these things as an options at least:
1- Rear spare tire carrier.
2- Leather stitched door panels.
3- 2nd row fold-out armrest.
4- Bigger V8 engine '05 LR3 HSE V8 - Adriatic Blue - Larini Exhaust System - Lamp Guards - Dual battery system - Hidden 12k winch - Rasta Sump Guard

I'd make it less aerodynamic!
It cuts through the air far too easily.

Apart from a clock I can see (which they have done) and Cruise control from 0mph (which is illegal) I was going to say "nothing".
But why not (in a near £1000 windscreen) include a small solar panel to match the tiny but continuous 12v discharge the vehicle needs? I notice a new thread
http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic23466.html?highlight=
worrying about this.
Also a push-button access to extended height suspension - it is such a faff achieving it...

I've solved that by putting a roof rack with ammo boxes on . A roof top tent can also provide the same functionality as can jerry cans or the spare wheel

Q8 - the 5.0L V8 is coming for 2010
- one-touch rear windows
- electric opening third-row windows (the kind that push outwards - would help a lot with managing wind in the car when front windows down)
- auto-dimming sideview mirrors (and a button to turn off the dimming in the inside rearview)
- slightly wider body/track to give the car a more planted feel (like the FFRR)
- proper hooks in the second row to hang dry-cleaning... small but oh so necessary! The hooks that are there now will barely hold one hanger.
- A "MAX A/C" button: again, small but useful and the FFRR has one.
- Reverse camera
- Reclining rear seats like Toyota has. I find the angle on the D3s rear seatbacks just a bit too steep.
- Knee airbags: might push the Euro NCAP to 5 stars that way!
- Sunglass/eyeglass holder on top of the rearview mirror (the kind that folds away into the roof like the FFRR has)
- Leather (or fake leather) covers on the interior grab handles for the doors.. really dislike the bare grey plastic ones that are there ATM.
- Better cupholders (or at least inserts that will hold a can or a small bottle of water without it tipping over)
- Opening rear sunroofs (might be too difficult but would be oh-so-cool)
- Have an option (which could be defeated from the front) for the audio controls in the rear to control the main audio.
- Give me a split-screen mode in the offroad navigation that will show the map on one half and the 4x4 info on the other half of the screen.
- Adaptive cruise control
I'm sure I could go on if I think hard enough.... Some of these features would be very easy and not too costly to implement. Others could just be options. I'll edit if I think of more
- second AUX input in the front (I'm guessing the one that's there currently has something to do with the optional entertainment system)
- more control over locking diffs
- truly defeatable DSC/traction control for sand and mud driving - it just needs to stay OFF
- Either an EPB that works or just a regular hand brake
- higher speed limit for offroad height when in sand mode (to climb the dunes)
- More control over ride height (ie. allowing user selection of the two super extended modes)
- Figure out a way for me to be able to put smaller rims on my V8 HSE!!! I'm tired of Land Cruisers, Patrols, Prados, Pajeros etc. etc. etc. having more float due to their higher profile tyres. They go fast too, and they don't need ridiculously large Brembos (that won't fit small rims) to stop them.
- User-selectable suspension settings from "comfort" to "sport", to make it more plush when not pushing hard. The car is already on air bags, so shouldn't be an impossible request.
- Tyre pressure monitoring system
- Fire extinguisher mounted under passenger seat, standard. First aid kit in the back, standard. Emergency warning triangles, standard. These are basics!
- Wheel changing tools that actually fit in the compartment designated for them (seriously what a problem it is to get those things in there!)
