Hi,
Ive had me 08 D3 for a couple of months (5000km's), and have blown the central locking fuse twice. Its a 30A rating fuse and seems to blow without any undue reason. I hope it is just some bedding in on the solenoids.
The worst part though is that today I was replacing the fuse and came inside to get my wife to show her the fusebox location etc. My mother walked past, saw the door open and closed - with the keys on the seat!! The car locked automatically, and required Roadside Assistance to break in.
Therefore two questions. 1. Has anyone experienced the Central Locking fuse issue, and 2. Are the keys (traditional metal bit) able to be copied so I can hide an emergency entry method somewhere outside the car?
Thanks in advance

No to part 1 and I doubt it to part 2 . The keys are not "cuttable" by a normal locksmith - YMMV though as I didn't pursue it further

The central locking fuse tripping is not common and what happened to your second set of keys? You could have used that to open the door. '06 Disco 3 TDV6 SE Buckingham Blue

Thanks for the "helpful" reply When we got the car and weren't able to "hide" a key in emergency (such as this) we decided that with Central Locking its pretty much impossible to lock yourself out and that if the key got lost then the best place for the spare would be inside the car where at least the LR Roadside Assistance could retrieve it somehow. Hence the thread on whether a key can be cut (just the traditional metal part) to allow mechanical access to the inside of the car. The ignition key would then be acessible!!

Ozberg,
Yes, you can get a key cut. I had a local locksmith in Melbourne cut one for me.
From memory it is a Ford blank, cost about $40-00.

Where there's a will there's a way! I'm sure you could hide the second key somewhere if you really want to! The first place I can think of is inside the rear recovery point cover (just make sure you wrap it in something and tape or velcro it down), but having the spare on the car itself would just make me nervous...

SKP,
Have you tried the aftermarket key:
- to open the doors?
- to start the car?
Best Wishes,
Peter

Bushwanderer,
Of course I tried it,
It does exactly what I want it to do.
It will open the pax door.
It will fit the ignition
AND turn the ignition on.
BUT,
It won't start the car
And that is what I wanted,
Now, if you want me to spell out why
I will have to PM you
As the reason is not polically correct

Thanks SKP. I was hoping the Ford blank was it. From memory my fathers ute was the same key shape, but I wasn't positive. I will get the local locksmith to knock one up.
I dont want it to start the car, just get in, as SKP has done. As far as the reluctance to hide the key outside the car, if a thief really wants to get in, they wont look for a hidden key. It will be via a smashed window.

Can't a spare key (with the electronics) be hidden in the D3 and an after market blank wired underneath. With the blank you could open the passengers door manually. Get the hidden spare key to start the D3.
Or do I have it wrong. 06 TDV6 SE with Extras

Hi DT
Sounds a logical way to do it and there an plenty of spots, eg wired on top of a chassis rail. to park a plain key.
The key is not lasercut, just a special grinder required for those blanks.

I was more thinking of them being able to drive off, not get in... So then if you don't mind that possibility, why not just stick in in the rear bumper under the recovery cover? Put it in a plastic bag and stick it to the cover so no shaking and you're set!

Hopefully there is no insurance issue if the car is taken and you only have 1 (or none) key to produce if required. I donīt know if that is an issue or not but given some insurers ability to wriggle it may be for some... Cheers
