| Foreign style towbar supplied?? |
|
Hi, thought I had posted this last night but seems to have gone astray!. Just bought 56 plate 13,500mls Disco3. Had spoken to first and only previous owner prior to purchase to check on any problems. She only used it for kids to school and shopping locally. Asked about off roading or towing but she never did that sort of usage. Couldn't find a towball anywhere in the car when I searched it, optomistically, at the dealers but could see ( in the styrofoam tray ) a fitting that goes into the towball "socket" that has a large ( 5 - 6 cm ) square horizontal "socket" instead of a "towball".
Asked my local dealer and the cars original supplier ( Morrisons of Stirling ) what it was and eventually after checking the part number it turns out its for foriegn, ie, American and Australian markets and gets a second component with a towball inserted for towing use! The first owner had no idea it was there or what it was.
I'm at a loss to know why it was supplied with the car - which it definitely was - and would in fact like to use a towbar for hauling my " tintent " etc about. Should L/R have actually inserted a proper UK towball in the styrofoam tray as part of the original delivery equipment or has this been a booboo? What do you think the chances of L/R swopping it ( unused ) at this late stage are, bearing in mind its of no legal use , according to dealership, in this country? All suggestions, painful or otherwise, will be gratefully received.

Does it look like this contraption (minus the receiver & ball)?
Isn't the tow bar an additional accessory? I didn't think you all got the styro tray over there either. I could be wrong on both accounts of course
If you can't use it, they sell quite well on ebay in the American market I'm not so good at giving advice...may I offer you a sarcastic comment instead?

Hi Sideview, many thanks for reply. Yes it looks exactly like the component that has the green key lock device and which, in your pic, points forward under the "bumper" or "fender" as you would call it. The item described and the styro tray both came with the car upon delivery. The original owner had specified the car with leather upholstery and footboards at purchase but knew nothing about the towing "item" or tray being supplied. Wonder what the postage to the USA is liable to be?

Unnecessary quote removed
Why can't you use it (does it not have type approval), odd that the colonies have a different style of tow bar.

Thanks for all the info folks, just heading off for a week in the sun so I'll do something about this when I get back. Taking it with me would probably have me over my baggage allowance!

maltesenick, I would be interested, send me PM if you decide to sell it.
Assuming your are where I think you are (small mining town in Scotland?) would need to check weight though for transit!

Nick,
This is a bit weird. I think it would be pretty hard to get this tow-bar fitted unless you specifically asked for it and a LR dealer managed to source it and agreed to fit it...
If she was indeed the only owner and has only ever used it to go to the shops, then she would never have gotten it fitted....
Something is not right here.....are you sure she was the only owner? Are you sure she bought it new? 2006 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

The 2" receiver bar is available in the UK, though it is a bit weird for anyone to end up with one unless they specifically ordered one. Maybe it's not a UK spec D3
