Anybody know any sizes or manufacturers that can help here? Or have an opinion on this? I know that many people have sucessfully fitted 265/70/17, with limited to nil rubbing. Well, I want to get the height, but without the width. I reckon it would work better in most offroad situations, and would give better fuel economy too. So this would mean a 235/80/17, or something similiar. Thoughts, guidance please.

Mr Andrew , try an " online tyre calculator " , it'll let you know what you can and cant have.Most of them give let you type in your stock tyre size ( 235/70/17 ? correct me if wrong , cat rem at the mo) and then your ideal/proposed tyre size.
Bear in mind that the " 70 " in a 265/70/17 etc is not the profile size in mm etc but a percentage of the radius or diameter ( again I can remember) see here for tons of usefull info

Thanks Discowex, good advice but I'm OK with this step. The much harder one seems to be availability, ie which tyre manufacturer (if any) make tyres in this size range? I can only fine 235/70/17 (and 245's, which are a very common replacement, and seem more available than 235'). I know that Cooper don't so does anybody make 75, 78 or 80 series tyres anymore?
