I've got a steady chirping noise on idle that sounds to be coming from the serpentine drive belt assembly. Can't hear it with revs, or it's too soft to hear over the engine. It first occurred a while back and I ordered a new belt, but then the chirp went away so I never did anything. Now after several months the chirp is back!
Not due for service for some time & dealer is a couple hours away, so I'm thinking to attempt changing the belt to see if that does the trick. Has anybody done this - is it a DIYer or a major pain in the arse & I should let the dealer handle it? Any thoughts, tips or tricks on the subject appreciated I'm not so good at giving advice...may I offer you a sarcastic comment instead?

Suggest that the dealer used a belt conditioning spray (silicone) to get rid of the squeak the first time. It doesn't last forever so time to spray again. What's the point.... it all comes out in the wash anyway!

The chirp is quite common on the earlier Discoverys and Range Rovers - my D1 sounds as if it has a canary under the bonnet sometimes! On these models it's caused by worn/dry bearings on the belt tensioner pulleys.

That explains why one of my RRC friends said that it's starting to sound like a Land Rover now.
Did change the belt out yesterday, ended up being a piece of cake. No more chirps thus far, so we'll wait & see if it returns I'm not so good at giving advice...may I offer you a sarcastic comment instead?

My D1 'under the bonnet' canary doesn't sing all the time but it may be that your belt change has fixed things - perhaps a minor difference in belt tension has had the desired effect
