UKdavvy,
If you have to work that hard to justify buying a D3 you probably can't and maybe don't really want to.
My LR3 is privately owned (slightly different, I know, as I didn't pay tax) and I'll end up leaving it here rather than trying to import it back to the UK. Why did I buy one? Not because I worried about horror stories from folk less informed than those on this forum that's for sure. No, I bought it 'cause it's a Landrover, and I wanted one.

Nooooooo. No more "reliability" threads. It just works. Buy the car and let's talk about something else.
BTW, welcome, UKdavvy

As already said, these forums always highlight issues, and people google their problem and always end up here on somewhere similar.
Mine's been a bit problematic, but dealer has been fantastic resolving all issues. Come next monday guess what I'm replacing it with . . .
A New D3. Wouldn't have anything else really. It's the perfect family and work vehicle for me. Forums alright too "To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

Prior to owning Disco's (I have had four a D1 300Td1 ES, Two D2's & now a D3 HSE) I owned a whole string of Volvos (good solid - reasonably reliable, sadly a BMW 5 series (RUBBISH), a Saab 900 SE 2.5 (Brilliant Car) + various (Mediocre) company vehicles....also I have to support 2 daughters with thier cars including a Scooby WRX........I suppose my opinion is as good as anybody elses.....after all I have had to pay for all the dissapointments.
On the whole I am very pleased with my Landrover vehicles......the one thing that does keep me faithfull is the dealer support for the (very) few things that have gone wrong (Charles Hursts / Belfast & Rocar / Huddersfield) for me have done thier job well. Others might say different - I use my own hard won experiences - not other peoples.....especially those that are Landrover critics
Over the last 10 years of Disco ownership the miles I have clocked up although maybe not as high as some...but the four Disco's have never had me stopped at the roadside stranded & I have had to travel through abominable road & weather conditions due to family & work commitments. In comparison one Volvo & the BMW were not only less reliable - meaning I couldnt really depend on the car......they also cost me lots of money to the point with those makes never ever again.
Some find reliable / sensible cars that suit family needs "boring".......I convert this statement to fills my practical & financial resources.......there is no way I would buy BMW products & subsidise thier arrogant dealerships that cannot support the technology, similarly Volvo's towards the latter end of era I owned cars in moved away from solid / reliable to "fast & furious" at the expense of losing a lot of customer allegiance.....including mine.
Another thread on here that seemed to fizzle out over the weekend was a defintion of quality, maybe quality is whatever the customer says it is...i.e. the bar keeps moving higher or a conformance to a specification....the spec on Land Rover should be "reliability as standard".......it could be improved to eliminate some of the isues dealt with on this forum - but we dont hear of all those that just dont have issues.
I like many others on here arent on some sort of ego trip & have to impress others with what I buy.......my justification is solely using what I have bought to drive & really do depend on......I hope & trust that Tata ownership, investment & leadersship will improve the situation....following on all the good work that Ford have done & reverse the disaster that BMW "ownership" created. ....have Disco3 HSE TD6 Auto...
....also S Type 2.7 Auto....

I am by no means a LR fanatic, the D3 is my first. I did about 32k mls in it. With a few minor niggles (leaking roof, broken horn) and a big one (erratic suspension/gearbox/hdc failure), which is now supposed to be solved (fingers crossed) but the car never left me stranded and would restart normally.
Before the D3 I had a BMW 530d, which spent weeks at the dealer getting serious fixed, but they never were fixed. In 2 years about Euro 20.000 was spent under warranty. I still have a BMW Z4 M Coupe, which had worn camshafts after 20k mls, it creaks a little, the factory brakes are poor for such a fast car, the ipod connection brakes down, the phone is lousy. A looooooong time ago I had a Golf VR6 which I dumped at the dealer because all of the problems. I also owned a lot of Alfa's which surprisingly to some, never left me on the hard shoulder.
Don't be fooled by the reputation of cars. It's just that modern cars -particularly a modern 4x4 with air suspension, special programmes galore, on board electronics etc...- are extremely complex and therefore prone to errors. All brands suffer, also the German ones. If you are afraid of this, buy a 15 year old Land Cruiser. The D3 is one of the best cars I ever owned. Towing is easy, long distance cruising relaxing, off road sublime. It's spacious, rugged and comfortable. The car even has decent turn in, steering feel and performance for such a Mammoth vehicle. 07 D3 TDV6 HSE Java Black

I've just seen some D3's getting put together at the factory, and I can assure you that the process is totally modern and every care is taken during assembly.
The old BL/ROVER days are definitly gone, Ford have improved things massively, and Tata will probably do even more. Silver TDV6 HSE

I had a Range Rover from new in 1992 to 1998. No end of problems including 4 complete breakdowns - eg ABS collapsed . It was, when it worked ,brilliant off road . LR were dismissive about the problems to the point of arrogrance so I thought I would never buy another.
I then bought an Isuzu Trooper - which was the opposite - superb build quality and one minor fault in 6 years - but not a patch on the RR off road.
When the D3 was announced I was persauded to give LR a go again ( but for the very last time !) and I am very glad that I did . I have a Jan 05 model , one of the early ones. Apart from a few minor niggles it has been trouble free - but best of all as others here say the grin factor is tremendous.
I have never had a car before that is truly multi purpose - motorway cruiser , towing ( 25 ft rig with boat on ) and off road. I cannot see buying anything other than another one.

Yeah, me too and it's not the most expensive one either. I'd have another in a heartbeat.

ukdavvy hi. Do you do a search on every car before you buy it or just this one? This forum goes back to 2005 so you are going to have every single problem imaginable on here. Some of the problems are probably one off that no one else will encounter. Some of the earlier problems that you might have read about have been sorted and will never occur again in newer versions.
I have had mine just over a year and apart from the fog light wiring shorting(common problem easy fix) I have had 23k very enjoyable miles
I cant think of any car I would rather have at the moment and this is the most reliable car I have ever owned.
If you like the car buy one you won't regret it Global Warming.... I'm luvvin it.

You never can justify a D3 or other big car. maybe you can justify a Smart.
That's why I bought a G4 with a big petrol V8. No I cannot justify it. I hope I will be able to pay the fuel bills.
But it will give me a big And that's why we do it. Roel

Any system is only as reliable as the components its made from and how the components are put together. LR uses the same components as other premium car manufacturers (e.g Mercs, Audi, BMW also use ZF auto units) albeit with a few extra mods.
The main problems with the D3 were software related. Others were to do with low spec compressors and some other components. These problems have all been fixed.
In the 35000km I've traveled in my MY08 SE I've only had one problem, a faulty aircon compressor, fixed under warranty.
Brilliant car, the looks make the "competition" seem like mutant creepy crawlies. And when you hit really bad driving conditions that stops other cars, this car gives you absolute confidence. There are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand binary, and those that do not
