I'm with you there Dunc -about to go for L/R number 2 ( a Defender this time). Through spreading the mileage over more vehicles, they last longer!
No point in lamenting residuals -this is a time to buy. Only snag is my drive is rather cluttered..... Richard

Just to add to the 4x4 trade in debate....
I have a six month old Mercedes GL320CDI (7 seat ML). It is Mar 08(08 plate) and fully loaded. List price was £57K (although no one pays list these days), I have just been offered £32K as the best underwritten part ex price! A 43% drop on list in 6 months! I supose I was lucky to get any bids at all!
Stupid thing is that the £32K offer is actually £1100 less than the Guaranteed Future Value on my 2 year PCP deal!
Needless to say the GL stays on the drive for another 18 months!

You should see the depreciation on the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S
I know someone who bought one two years ago for £75k...
Can't get £25k for it now!
£50,000 down the drain in 2 years (and about £15,000 of petrol). Paul

twizzle wrote:I'm keeping mine... at 106,000 it still drives like new, ok the seats a bit baggy and there is a lovely used feel to the car, but guess what ?? i don't care where i park it, i fill it up with crap for the dump with no stress, we went to the beach in france on holiday it it was filled with sand from the kids a quick valet at tescos from the guys who lurk in the carpark and its as good as new....
Cost to change for me would be pushing 10K thats a lot of diesel!!!
i'm aiming for 200k, if its good enough for those HA discos its good enough for me!!
240,000 miles and still going strong!!

I eventually shifted mine at 22k...took a hit but thats life!
even worse, mate of mine with a £52K Q7 cannot get bids above £23k at 9 months and 10k miles
I'm running my aygo til the market sorts itself out...£20 road tax, £120 insurance, real 58mpg on petrol!...will re-enter the disco/ffrr market soon enough though... 2007 HSE Java Black.....sold

Thanks guys. My 55 plate S with keying on every panel must be worth all but so what! A brilliant car to drive and a wonderful allrounder.
OK the service last week cost nearly £500 and I'm now wondering whether to get the warranty as its now 3 years old but I think the economical thing to do would be to keep it at least another 7 years.

Incredible! I am now seriously thinking about taking the hit and getting out of this car! Have seen a 56 plate 207 Diesel for £5K that might tide me over for a bit.... 63mpg £35 road tax...........

That Q7 story is shocking - can you post the details of it on here as someone might buy it (I know it has no low ratio box and useless rear rear seats but you never know).
Personally my Disco is out of warranty this month. I'm fitting tow bar electrics this week (at an indie), have bought a swan neck tow bar on ebay, am looking at fitting a Parrot to replace the Nokia fixed car kit and am keeping mine at least another two years but probably three to four.
PS I'd be tempted by the 3.0 TDV6 next autumn but my four year old manual SE will be worth only £13-14k by then and £25k to change will be a lot to stomach.

Residual values for all cars, especially large vehicles, has been dropping off a cliff for everyone, just because of fuel, tax economy etc. Most of us on here have been hit hard, but surely, if you're happy with your car, the financially sensible thing to do now, is hang on and enjoy the ride. Depreciation on older vehicles always slows and if you've already taken the recent massive hit on a new vehicle, then why do it all again?
I recently thought of swapping for a nearly new (demonstration) disco but after seeing the £17k I was offered for my mint 3yr old HSE, my survival skills took over!
Instead, I've bought an LR extended warranty and a few toys. The money I save I'll try to put aside for the big hit when the disco4 comes out! Paul

To add to the tales....
I was nosing around the local dealer this afternoon when I was offered £20k for mine (05 SE 46k miles some HSE bits) against a 8.5MY SE
I'm not looking for a new motor but it did make me think a little - then I saw sense and realised that I love what I have wayyyyyyyyyy too much to get rid of her....
