Alpine Roof

I recently got my car back from the stealer, and noticed a rather unamusing crack across the Alpine Roof.

On closer inspection, there is a small external impact point where a few small chips of glass have come away, and then the crack runs away from the impact point in opposite directions. It looks like some twonk has tried to crack the roof with a centre punch if that makes it any clearer.

The stealer is telling me that they have seen a few of these caused by some mysterious flying gravel thrown up from the road. Bearing in mind the car was in their care when the problem occurred, I have given them the appropriate response Evil or Very Mad , but I wondered if any other members had experienced a problem like this (with the roof , not the stealer!)?

I have heard of rear windscreen breaking when gravel has been thrown up against bikes on a bike carrier or trailer and bounced back onto the glass, but the physics of this one confuse me Confused

Thanks in advance for any help

Andy

I'm with heapster.....some spanner has probably dropped a spanner on the roof

sorry Embarassed

You're right though....the physics don't quite match up with a downward impact on the top of the car Confused

Flying gravel about as likely as a flying saucer given the location.

Tools are words that came to my mind too Wink

Alas, absolute proof is always hard to come by. All I know is that the car was washed and leathered by me on the Sunday and was not used before it went to them for work by way of a transporter on the Monday. When I washed the car, I would not have missed a two foot long crack in the alpine roof Shocked

Time for some fun and stealer games...

When you handed over your vehicle to the dealer, presumably you signed a bit of paper that noted any damage (or lack of) on your car?

I think I want to have your children....(only kidding!) Bow down Bow down I completely forgot about that pink form!

Dug out the form and guess what - all clear. So the damage could only have happened on the recovery truck or at the stealer

The problem is the repair is about £1,000 all in, which is a bit beyond the glass repair part of the policy, so it is a full claim. This uses up one strike from two allowable in three years before I lose the no claims protection.

I'm sure that someone else on here (was it DiscoStu?) had theirs replaced under the glass policy (It IS glass afterall) so didn't affect their no claims.
Censored it! It's got a load of black bits on OK!!!

Mine was replaced on insurance after FR rack was fitted.

Seems OK so far as Ive had no leaks. My advice though is to get the dealer to arrange it as mine used a specialised firm and said they wouldnt use the likes of RAC, Autoglass etc because its not something they do often. As the entire headlining etc has to come out I was happier that the dealer did it rather than a mobile company.

In general the roof seems quite strong so i would have thought you would need to hit it quite hard to break it. I was standing on the rack a couple of weeks ago in the rain when my foot slipped off one of the bars onto the roof Whistle. its either a strong roof, i'm very light, or i was lucky Smile

Thumbs Up Been there. Done that. Paid the bill and left the insurance claim for another day.

Are you guessing that it's beyond the "glass" part of your policy or is that fact ?

A HSE Heated front screen can't be too far off the same sort of money, surely ?
