Proper carbon-fibre needs an autoclave - you can get the fibre mats quite easily though and some people (e.g. model R/C enthusiasts) use it by putting 'dope' (epoxy resin?) over it to harden it. This looks the part but isn't very strong at all.
If you know someone who works in a university, the Engineering depts often have autoclaves that you may be able to 'borrow' You need to read up on how to lay the fibre mats in the right directions etc and how to do the calculations relevant to your case.
Fibreglass is much easier to DIY but nowhere as strong as Carbon fibre.
What exactly do you want to make?

John,
My fishing buddy works in the aerodynamics team at Mclaren F1, makes the suspension arms, wings, nose cones etc..he may be able to point you in the direction or even make some parts for you for a small fee.
Drop me the details and ill pass them on "you cannot teach stupid people to do clever things"

I'm at the early point of getting car number 3 (below) fully prepared for stage rallying. There are a number of people in foreign lands offering kevlar parts but I was simply wondering if this could be done 'at home'. Wings, bonnet, boot-lid, spoilers and lots of engine bay parts (cowlings, undertrays etc) are being considered.
The budget would buy a new HSE (with extras!) but the end result will be up to the spec of a 'works' quattro. I've got a reasonably local preparation outfit to do the shell with seam welding and multipoint weld-in custom cage but the fun starts when we are looking at puting it back together. From what's been said, it looks like I will just have to bite the bullet and buy off the shelf, but I've heard a few folks in the community complain about fit & finish of kevlar parts so I was simply wondering how difficult it could be. Looks like the answer is 'too difficult' The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom

Believe it or not guys, but a rally prepared MkII escort will sell at anything between £20k-£40k these days, never mind a well spec'd Audi quattro.
DG, I'm never worried about your posts - I only worry about who writes them The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom

John,
just back in the country and catching up here. There is a firm SGL Technics in Muir of Ord that produces. carbon fibre parts. I did some welding procedures for a new production line and ovens for them a while back. I can dig out some contact details first week if it would help. Chipped, K&N (16mths),tow pack, AT2's, Mantec, fridge in boot, invertor, Garmin, laptop/Memory Map, Optima yellow top, Traxide Kit, Phillips Extreme bulbs

Hi JMC,
David Sutton who ran the works team is alive and kicking and operating in Daventry, running historic rally cars. Also has a very interesting museum comprising of cars from his Ford days through works Quattros (Mikkola's, Mouton's etc) inc. short wheelbase. Let me know if interested and I'll send you details.
Best, Simon

I've been to see David in Daventry a couple of times with a view to building my car and I'm afraid to say that I was less than impressed with the 'business' side of things. Besides, the 'museum' is not going to be there for much longer and all the cars belong to an american consortium and they are currently up for sale:

I've looked into buying one or two of these cars but they want them sold as a single 'lot' and are asking in excess of £1.6 million. I know I like my own collection, but I don't think SWMBO would be too keen on having another 30 cars. Besides, I can't quite stretch to that amount........
