Just got 4x4 Mag and there is an article about closing entry into the Simpson between Dec.1 and March 15 each year.
Who on Earth would wont to be in that heat at that time of the year eneyway
I dont see this as a problem, what do others think
Cheers

I personally don't have a problem with the closure as long as it is not extended in the future. I wouldn't enjoy a desert crossing in mid-summer now. The closure wouldn't effect many people as very few travel out there at that time of year.
Is it QLD or SA imposing the closure? 06 TDV6 SE with Extras

Are they talking about closing the whole park??

And WTF would they really *need* to close it for anyway? Tristan

Devil's Advocate question on this: How many of us have found ourselves trying desperately to convince a (German, Frenchman, Belgiun, take your pick) that it may not be the thing to do to drive from Broome to Alice in January? I suspect a few "recoveries" of the remains of these travellers may have something to do with the closure. Any of us who've worked "up north" know when not to go (probably a bit like most Aussies heading into snowdrifts and not knowing what to expect). Jim Dowell

There are people who live and work in those parts of Australia that drive the crossing to get from job to job. In the summer they travel at night, Camp and sleep through the heat of day. Typically they will cross very much qucker than you could believe.
Buy I agree their are some very crazy yourist about in the summer as well that jusy cannot be helped.

And watch for the proposed ban on trailers in the Simpson too.
Having just seen some of the damage done by the Toorak Tractor brigade who pulled into Birdsville a few weeks back, Land Cruisers weighed down with roof racks, jacks, jerrycans and enough spares to build a new car and of course, the obligatory sand flag on a 3 metre pole (which will be proudly worn for the next six months in the city), and most of them dragging an overloaded camping trailer, it can't come soon enough! There's just the little matter of 50% more wheels and a disproportionate amount more rolling resistance plus the tendency to drive around the sandy/slippery/boggy bits so the track becomes hundreds of metres wide. And that is just what happened with the group I referred to - there had been 80mm. of rain in the Birdsville - Innamincka area 10 days previously and the damage these heros inflicted has contributed to the demands for closure of the tracks, not only in summer, but for a strictly rationed permit system to operate during the cooler months.
By the way, I do drag a camper trailer, and have done for many years, but I do not use it in the Simpson, Tanami or any of the other fragile sandy deserts where I regularly travel. There's just too damn many wheels to dig out
I think Ianv summed it up - the inexperienced and the just plain thoughtless will provide enough ammunition for the NatParks and the greenies to impose more restrictions. Ex Defender 110 200Tdi owner.

disagree with you totally. if someone chooses (we still have that option in Oz) to tow a camper then so be it. I have seen so many dickheads do damage by other means (axes, guns fires etc) and they can be just as if not more destructive in a cowboy way going where they are not supposed to etc and dont see how you can make judgements like the greenies with banning 4x4's in the city.

Hello Cat - Welcome back to the Colony.
But I'm not sure I understand your reply - I'm not for banning 4x4s and I'm not in favor of closing National Parks or restricting access to them. At the same time, I am not in favor of the place being degraded by inexperienced and thoughtless people. I've spent a lifetime working in our Northern areas and I realise that there must be changes resulting from the huge number of visitors now compared with 30 years ago. In the Flinders, the bitumen is being extended to Blinman, which was not so long ago a dry weather rough dirt track. Birdsville now has a housing development for 75 new residences, and the Queensland Government has a sealed road from the coast to within 75km. of the dig tree. So the visitor pressure will increase, and with it, the NatParks people will take any opportunity to enlarge their empire and restrict our access to it. I was trying to point out that the idiot fringe of 4x4 owners can cause a lot of damage and provide more arguments for the greenies to push for extreme restrictions. But short of keeping a full clip in the Ruger .223, I'm not sure how we can control the irresponsible
And by the way, nowhere did I suggest that towing a trailer was not a good idea; as I indicated, I use one, but I'm a bit selective where I tow it.
So, make yourself a nice cup of tea and sit down and re-read my original post - you'll see we are both on the same side

Sorry Tony, I can understand where CW got the idea you approve of the ban. In the above post you agree with the ban response. Getting there is half the fun
