Th line is only about 6" wide and as such when a car jumped the lights and hit the train it quickly derailed causing the fataility. It was the second one in 18 months and there have been others.
Its actually 15 inch. There have been quite a number of level crossing "incidents" over recent years in th UK, and in the vast majority its a one way ticket for the road user. The worst as far as the train was concerned was Upton Nevet were someone killed themselves and several on the train.
Its worth doing the sums - train, even a small one weight = many tonnes, car 1-3 tonnes; train made of thick steel (side of cab can be 6mm or more, and is one of the thinner bits - some windscreens are of the order of 40mm!!!). Car is (paper thin) steel ~1mm....... Not a contest of equals - I've never seen Clarkson looking so scared as after he saw the train vs Espace.
Anyone who even considers jumping the light at a level crossing deserves to be hung up by a suitable part of their anatomy until they are dry - hitting them in the rocks is too quick and not painful enough. Rob Smith

I agree, what journey is that urgent.......to be honest I could'nt give a bout the car driver, as far as I am concerned thats Dangerous Driving, and endangering life. If the court gets involved then yes, quite possibly a disqualification at worst, fine upto 5k depending on earnings....look at the DVLA site, this offence carries 9-12 points.
If a new driver, instant licence loss and a retest after ban.
I feel more sorry for the train driver who has to live with the accident/flashbacks, and the fire service that have to pick up the bits..... PERMANENTLY IN THE SITE NAUGHTY CORNER

You've never crossed an orange light as it has changed just in front of you with no chance of stopping except half way across the junction, whilst doing normal speeds??? Honda Dog U better DUCK!!!!!

That's not the same as crossing a red light Del.
And with traffic lights you can see what the traffic is doing... in a car approaching a level crossing, you have no idea how long the lights been red and thus no idea of when the metal monster is approaching and at what speed.

It is legal to pass through an amber light but you should stop unless it is unsafe to do so Powered by TorqTune

Speaking as a signalman who works a signal box with a level crossing, this happens too often.
The lights go yellow before red, crossing on red the least you can expect is to be hit by the barriers as they come down or trapped, you have all seen the what happens at the worst!!!
Why people have a death wish to cross in front of 2000tons moving at 70 miles an hour is beyond me, yet it happens every day.
Network Rail and BTP are quite rightly prosocuting everyone caught.

Im a senior engineer for one of the rail freight operators, and before that BR, I have had to attend many incidents over the years involving derailments, one of the worst was where a school bus driver though he was being clever and pulled accross the rail crossing but his exit was blocked by traffic in front of him.........the lights started flashing and the barriers came down, panic set in as there was no where to go.
Thankfully all of the kids managed to get off the bus, but within seconds a commuter train piled into the back of the bus and derailed the train, again thankfully no one was seriously injured.
I cannot put into words for my contempt of the bus driver to put so many lives at risk, and this goes for anyone who flauts the law on railway crossings, remember, passengers trains are lighter anything between 35 and 600+tonnes but go fast....freight trains can be up to 3200 tonnes, with inertia, that takes a hell of a lot of distance to stop!
Remember the Selby crash in 2001, that was a Land Rover 110 that caused that, (the driver of the car and trailer with the 110 on elledegly fell asleep at the wheel and it went down the bank and ended up on the railway), a High speed GNER passenger train hit and derailed straight in to the path of a loaded coal train of about 2000 tonnes coming in the opposite direction, with the passenger train doing 125mph and the coal train doing 60ish mph thats a big crash! and several people died in it.
Be careful at crossings...please!
