| Should I complete the sale? or is it a duffer> |
|
After much agonising in the current climate, I have just decided to jump in a buy a 4x4. I found a lovely 07 Discovery3 HSE (23K on the clock) at the main dealers and did the deal. When I went to collect I found out the car was 'broken', a sensor or something they said! It later turned out to require a new EGR valve and turbo, as apparently the turbo was damaged by the EGR.
The current situation is that they have my part ex, I have a courtesy discovery and I haven't paid for the new car, which may be ready for collection next week. Obviously Iam concerned if this is a bad car and just the start of problems to come
With all the collective knowledge in here, What is the considered view?
Your advice is much appreciated
Cheers

It has been an issue for some ...but there aren't any reported recurrences once fixed that I can find on here. There's nothing to sugeest that this will be a bad motor in general ...and besides you have warranty time left.

Hi Mike,
Yes, something like that will knock your confidence a bit. But you are in the driving seat. Don't pay them any money, let them fix it and make sure all is well before picking her up. At the end of the day is this car 'the one' i.e. spec colour you are after? If not walk away there are loads of D3's out there at the mo.
You do however have a 30 day exchange period on a used LR, so that should give you the confidence to give it a month and see if you are happy. It is a 'known' issue, so don't worry about it and look forward to joining the frat.
LR blurb (found here: http://www.usedvehicles.landrover.co.uk/co...ndBenefits )
EXCHANGE POLICY
We are confident that all Approved vehicles meet the strict quality standards. However, if the dealer is unable to resolve to your satisfaction a demonstrable fault, within the first 30 days or 1,000 miles (whichever is sooner), you will be entitled to exchange your vehicle for a similar vehicle of equal or higher value.*

Thanks for the replies.
Interesting that 1 in 4 are voting to walk away!
Ken - I don't know what you could mean - By the way, very tidy looking motor, but I set my heart on black and all the 'before you buy' guides say look for signs of off road use. I didn't need to look too far for evidence of that!
Gazzer - good points, but it doesn't compensate for the hassle factor and 1000 miles is probably down to 2 weeks. Regarding spec, the colour is good for me, and after reading various articles it seems that the HSE is the one to go for even if the SE has everything I need/want. Because the HSE appears to be more 'desirable', which hopefully reflects at resale time, and as this one was at SE prices, due to slightly high mileage it seemd a good deal - maybe Iam finding out why!
Looking at it another way, I am getting a turbo with no miles on the clock and a latent problem fixed!

Well, I'm probably a good one to comment
Once the EGR valves have been done (Get them to do both to save having to go back later) and a new Turbo as well, sounds like you have a good car. I can say that once mine were done, I was a happy camper.
Hope you are going to take it off road ? See you at the next Lakes do "To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

Well Tuesday came and went and still no parts. Hopefully just another 10 days they say! (7 to get them and 3 to fit!)
it does mean that the mileage is going on the loan Disco, which is great!
Also driving the loan car has convinced me that the Disco 3 is the way to go! And the feedback here has helped me decide to continue with this purchase.
90BHP, they are fitting the 2nd valve too! - good tip! - When is the next lakes bash, I can't see any mention in the events section?
Cheers for the help

The turbo has arrived and I may get the car delivered next week...yet another week! Is it typical for repairs to take so long?
On the plus side, found a few green lanes to explore in the loan car, one in the lakes and some on my doorstep!
looked at this, but without some expereinced drivers around, wasn't going on my own!

'This must be a contender for the most fearsome monster officially designated as a ford. I approached from the northern end of Garstang town down the obscure Wyre Lane. I soon saw the high footbridge, and then a muddy but clearly well used track dropping down into the 40ft wide and fast flowing River Wyre. (Image 1) "

Tomorrow is the day! Turbo fitted all ready for delivery!
Spoke to workshop supervisor to try and get an explanation to the problem and cause. It turns out that the EGR valves are ok and have not been replaced, it was a turbo failure only.
