Front snow chain clearance

Practiced putting on some Pewag Snow chains for the D3 front and back before winter hits. Checked the inside clearance for the front and its about 5mm. I think that this might be OK. What do you reckon, should I play safe and get spacers?

it is unnerving I had similar experience although didnt have to put them on in the Alps last year. I asked dealer about spacers what are they was the reply. Im looking to part ex them for one of the attachments that run around the centre of the wheel. I have no confidence in my chain fitting ability and any slack may mean something gets snagged !

I use the RUD chains on standard 18" rims with no problems.

Our HSE has the 19" wheels, so would be interested to hear from anyone who can recommend chains that fit well to this size?

Im looking at taking my D3 up the Alps next year, obviously Ill need a set of chains...Ive looked at using the weissenfal socks, but as yet they are not legal in the Alps, so the question is (my car running on standard 255/18"), what is the best recommended chain to use, if RUD etc, what varient?

I dont want to fit any spacers as this may cause warranty issues (stressed bearings etc).

I may even go down the buying from a LR dealer (Nick any chance of a quote?), and that way Im covered if they cause a problem....genuine items and all that.

Any help is appriciated.

Cheers

I too would welcome recommendations for chains that work OK on the 19" HSE wheels?

Kens will fit the 18's, but not sure about the 19s. Crews, you shoudl lookup Axl as he had some excellent chains for his 19's withoiut spacers.

Ringoosmeg, you should use the spacers.

Hi Ken, can I ask what you mean by spacers, is that for the wheel or the chains?

Right, bit of careful digging, AXL022 said in this thread:

Paul, Spacers are bolted onto the hub, then the wheels bolted onto the spacers. Once you've done a bit of driving on them, best to take the wheel off & check the spacers are still tight (don't forget your torque wrench!). Ask DiscoDunc about his Shocked Just DON'T put copperslip on them!

Bodsy,

whilst I take the point on the wheel spacers, I do get worried about fitting components to the ends of axles and their associated bearings, I work within an industry that is very tight (pardon the pun) on bearings, and putting this type of extra loading through them without prequalification would be a no no.

I wouldnt be so worried if it were a Defender that was used off road at relatively slow speed, but a D3 at motorway speeds to the Alps etc.....mmmm.

Regards

R
