I borrowed an exhaust jack this weekend but didn't have any success raising the wheels.
I plugged one of the tail pipes with a pipe tester (as well documented on this site). I raised the bag on its own without a problem but when I put it under the chassis it tended to bend over and wouldn't stand up for the last little bit to get the wheels off the ground.
I was concerned about pressing too hard up on the tail pipe to keep the hose on tight when the bag wouldn't inflate any further.
I've watched videos etc and seen photos of people using the jacks so I'm not sure where I'm going wrong.
In the end, the seam around the inlet on the bag came apart. I don't think this was originally the problem because I couldn't see or hear any escaping gas but maybe that was a factor. It's a "Mean Green Bullbag" which is made in Australia and sold by Opposite Lock, and I don't think the guy I loaned it from has used it more than once so the failure of the materials is a concern. (I'll try to track down the manufacturer to discuss the failure or see if someone can plastic weld it or glue it.)
Besides the fact that it's now , should it "just work" or is there a bit of technique to using it?

how tall is it when inflated and where did you position it? You need to place it so all the upper surface of the jack is under the car, ideally fairly central on the chassis rail. Because of the way the suspension works you need to get the chassis a fair way up to lift the wheels. Carbon footprint? I neither know nor give a damn

Used air/exhaust jacks in the past with no worries, but never had much success on my defender 110.
Havent tried it on the D3 yet. If you are helpful and then stop, you get more agro than if you never helped in the first place.

Depending on age of bag, I would be getting OL to replace under warranty. Getting there is half the fun

I have one with my CT disco 1. I have never had problems with it.
Put it below the front doors on a D1 and inflate it a little till it touches the sill, adjust it so it stand nice up and continue to inflate it.
Like with a normal jack prevent the car from rolling away by blocking the tyres.
It goes amazingly quick I find. Roel

If there's too much back pressure the engine simply stalls Carbon footprint? I neither know nor give a damn

Does the viagra go in the fuel or the air bag?
Seriously for a moment...
1. The issue I had with the tail pipe was that when the bag wouldn't straighten up I felt a lot of exhaust pressure on the cone at the opening of the hose. By pressing firmer I could feel some flex in the tail pipe and was worried about stressing the brackets and joints. It was like the bag was resisting filling to lift the chassis beyond the travel of the suspension.
2. I tried my best at least half a dozen times to partially inflate the bag and then get it in position so that it would go up straight but it would fold over. I also put it under the chassis and not near the edge as I was worried about the plastic below the doors breaking under the load. And, I used offroad height.
3. Had a chat with the OL manager in QLD - they get the bags made for them by some outfit. I'll take the bag down to the local dealer and see what they think.
I don't know whether one type of exhaust jack works better than another - they all look the same.

Sounds faulty if it went at the seam.
There are bags and bags, price is not necessarily an indication of quality, some are crazy prices. I got mine at K-mart, I decided I would make sure it was protected with rubber mats when in use and if it goes I'll get another, cost <$100. Getting there is half the fun

The post script to this is that OL say the faulty bull bag is not worth fixing and basically don't want to know about it. The bag (though basically unused) is out of warranty and was sold through Gowings which no longer exists.
They're short-sighted as it does nothing for their reputation. I'll be steering clear of them in future.
