| petrol in diesel disco 3 HELP |
|
I know this is really stupid but i have just put petrol in my diesel discovery i have just been to france returned on a very low tank showing 20mph left on the readout parked next to the pump at a older bp garage where the lines and nozzels are black and put £30.00 of unleaded in .
I started it and moved it from the the pumped and have just been transported home without starting it again .
So do i need to take it to a dealer or can i drain it myself and will it affect my warranty
Any help greatly appreciated

Looks like a dealer Job. Other wise it will affect your warranty. Your not the first and will not be the last. I've lost count on how many people have miss fueled and then started up. If it ain't got 4 wheels, Don't Bother.

Melox, A similar thing happened to mine a couple of months ago - although it was driven for about 10 miles with a 50:50 mix of diesel and unleaded. Land Rover insist that the entire fuel system is replaced in order to keep your warranty - the bad news is that this costa £4-6000. The good news is that most insurance companys will cover it. I ended up paying only the £250 excess on my policy.
There are many posts on here regarding mis-fuels. Some peoplee have had success in claiming against the fuel companies. It may be worth approaching BP, particularly if it was the older black/dark blue colour scheme for the pumps.
Obviously, it's up to you what course of action you take - drain the tank and say nothing, or have it repaired. I had mine repaired because it had been driven a cosiderable distance and I was due to drive to Frane with wife and children on-board. 07 Silver TDV6 XS Manual + Tubes, Tints, White indicator repeaters, Xtreme H7s, LR dog Guard and Valeao Windy-Wipers

I put unleaded in mine and it cost me £500 to get LR to fix it. I never started the car and there are posts on here quoting silly money for LR to fix the problem if you have started it.
I know the AA can come and flush out the tanks for a couple of hundred quid which might also be an option - check out their website.

Thanks for all your replies have taken it into landrover because i used landrover breakdown to collect it and they might cross refference it if i do nothing , so will let you know the cost' personaly i think its aload of and they over kill with replaceing parts but you buy a expensive car and the repaires will be high.

One of our drivers had a petrol contamination issue with our Merc Sprinter (receipt stated diesel but there was obviously petrol in it to a considerable degree).
First symptom was difficult starting after being driven for some 50miles with no issue, this was traced to a couple of seals that had started to draw in air due to the petrol contamination....this is no doubt what LR are wary of however if the vehicle hasn't been started this is overkill but I guess they can't verify whether any D3 has been started since mis-fuelling so they protect their warranty status by insisting on a new fuel system. Replacing the tank as some have had to do still seems OTT even in that situation though IMHO. Cheers

Hope it goes OK melox2
Mods... - shouldn't one of the more authoritative threads on this subject be made a "sticky"?
It's probably the biggest unintended expense a D3 owner will incur, and folk quite naturally start a new thread when it happens...

Its a bit tricky Andrew, as we know the answers, but we are not an authority on the subject. To avoid any warranty issues, we have to go along with what Land Rover say. If they say the whole system needs changing then we cannot argue that, and potentially invalidate someones warranty.
As vehicles that are out of warranty get misfuelled, and different tactics are taken, then the true long term effects will become clear.
I personally think we should help out each individual victim according to the circumstances. Silver TDV6 HSE

Point(s) taken.
Could we then lay out the views/ options without "favour" - I'm just thinking of the panicking owner wanting information.
Many seem to start a new thread. I'm sure some of that is from not knowing what to search for... would anyone search on "mis-fuelling" (with or without hyphen ) when they'd just put petrol in an expensive diesel vehicle? Your heart has to go out to the cries for help...
On the other hand it's probably impossible to help any more than the forum already does. In retrospect I think a more dire warning in the handbook is called for.

scarey thing is when you buy a second hand car you really have no idea if its been misfueled. My instinct would be to part ex asap !!

Just thought i would update people on the situation with miss-fueling! My disco is still at the dealears with a repair bill of just over £3000.00, this is because Landrover stipulate to the service department what has to be done. Funny thing is, there is another one at the same dealer with the same problem through the same insurance company! The guy on service said the problem is rife, so i am not alone!!
The downside is, Landrover wont give me a courtesy vehicle because it was my fault.... the parts required to fix it are not available from landrover and also have lead times of more than a month... and yes i will be making a complaint to landrover on this as i think i have suffered enough
I do love this vehicle but i worry about something going wrong out of warranty as the parts and labour are so much

The problem also lies in whether you realise you have misfuelled too. Imagine you realise, then lock and unlock the car, this has already done little damage as when operating the locks it primes the system..................To be honest, for me as a HGV driver I am more likely to misfuel SWMBO's car as its petrol when normally I spend all my time at Diesel pumps when driving truck PERMANENTLY IN THE SITE NAUGHTY CORNER
