Hi everyone, my names andy, and im thinking about buying a discovery 3,
I have a few issues (as I bet a lot of you had) and cant seem to find the info that I want anywhere on the net, so i hope you all dont mind if I pick your brains a bit !
First of all, Ive had some crazy cars, hot hatches, mental jap racers, a roadster, 5 series beemer, vans, and a few boring cars as well, but ive never owned, or indeed driven a 4X4. I have this idea of a land rover being a notch above your shoguns, l200 s, jeeps, and such like, would you agree or is this just misguided patiotism !!
I currently drive a vectra 150 sri diesel, which i am very happy with, but as i have just bought a caravan i find myself hankering for the landy.
The reason I bought the vectra was (1) the impending caravan purchase (2) I was forced into selling my baby, a 2005 subaru impreza wrx, due to our friend mr darling making some very poor decisions on the RFL and the sudden hike in petrol prices, which leads me onto the question of fuel efficiency ! the subaru was absolutley disgusting on petrol !! and I mean EVIL !! you could empty the tank in 150 miles if you were so inclined, but even tootling around the doors i was getting about 20 to the gallon, I realise the d3 is a big heavy beast so wouldnt expect miracles, but is the fuel economy easy to live with or is it a bit of a grind ?
Is it faster than a shogun sport ? that is the slowest vehicle i have ever been in, and that includes my citroen despatch van !!
Is the build quality BMW or Renault ?
Are they really as much fun as they look ?
Thanks for taking the time to read this guys, (and ladys) and sorry if i bored you !!

Welcome to the site
Fuel economy ...mines a manual and spends most of the day on the motorways ..i get about 29-31 on average.(80 mph ish )
Around town it drops to about 23-25 .I have kept a spred sheet ( sad i know ) and the last 68000 miles with everthing including off roading it has averaged out at 25 mpg ...not bad for a vehicle that weights 2.7 tonnes and proberly another 1/2 tonne of tools in the back.
Cant comment on the speed difference , but its got enough grunt ..if you want more you can get it chipped ( and proberly get a few more miles to the gallon)
Build quality is very good ..mines had no major issues .
And yes ..off road they are an amazing tool ...and so much fun Help get this page up the rankings please

Its a Land Rover thing, it can't be explained and you wouldn't understand

hey andy.
all i can say is.... go and get 1
i get 27mpg towing a twin axle senator ( and don't know its there) and 32mpg on motorways. so im more than happy.
she aint a sports car but i find her more than adequate and she certainly holds her own at the traffic light races, and her size does help in the 'bargining' for road space
she is great off road and for long journeys. maybe im biased but i love her, i couldnt buy or drive anything else.
my young twins are nice and safe in her and ive total confidence in her no matter what the weather or traffic.
and ive noticed, that nobody seems to tailgate me... strange that.
have noticed many times on m11, m25, m2 blah blah, that some usually in bmw's or jap crap 4x4s are trying to shunt car in front out of way, get behind me and loads of space etc, then when i pull in, the rite up the jacksii of next car........
go on, buy 1, you know you want to lol.
oh and 1 last thing, the landrover family is like nothing else. ' ermy' 2007 D3 tdv6 xs java black.
formerly 'eeyore' 1992 D1 200tdi heavily mod
'cherry' 2000 D2 td5 slightly mod. my lil baby for 4 yrs
its nice to be important, but more important to be nice

welcome to disco3 Wolfgang
I bought a second-user D3 HSE a year and a half ago, it's now 2 years old
I've done just over 20k miles since buying it.
I've had a couple of problems (sorted under warranty) but they have not detracted me from ownership.
Build quality generally seems very good and on the HSE there are plenty of toys included.
Fuel consumption is between 25/26 in town and 30/33 on runs.
Towing a caravan returns about 22/23 average.
Off road it is brilliant although non-road tyres do help somewhat - so does learning HOW to drive offroad
All in all, a great vehicle IMHO

If you think you want one go to the stealer and do a test drive.
If you are not sure you want one. Don't go to the stealers because after you driven one you want one.
What more do I need to say. Roel

I would recommend a test drive too, Mine is an Auto and am able to change up and down manually. Full Auto I get 24-29. Manual lately I get 32-34 but is like a nun driving. So for aerodynamics of a block that aint that bad at all.
A tad concerned about your previous modes of transport though, WRX!!!!!!!!!!!!!, down here only ASBO boys, chavs drive them on Tuesdays only. it when the dole and child benefit comes from post office. Roads are quite busy till they have wasted their £5 of petrol and then they go off to MacDonalds, and newsagents for fags.
Joking aside, D3's are top luxury cruisers, and devilish offroaders that need impecable servicing, and maintenance. Keep on top of that and the D3 will take you around the world, fail to do that then you will have a troublesome offroader that nobody will touch.
Be prepared for devaluation more than most, a D3 is only worth top money to a person who wants a D3.
And yes, the vehicle tax is an issue, Mr Darling seems to think its our fault the climate is changing. Personally I think everybody in the SW of england should now consider an Ark or building houses on Stilts.

Test everything else first and then the D3. The choice will be easy There are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand binary, and those that do not

Road tax an issue?
When I collect my car I have to pay 1/2 a year UK road tax that will cost me 115 pounds I believe. When I am in The Netherlands I will have to pay about 110 Euro's for the V8 a TDV6 is more expensive.
I forgot to mentione that 110 euro is per month. Roel
