It's weird that this software bug only really seems to effect iMac users?
There must be a hardware difference, on the airport card side, between the iMac and all the other macs (book, pro, air, etc)
Is yours the aluminium cased version NJF? Paul

Yes. It's a great machine but the airport problem is becoming a huge pain. Not what I expect from Apple.

NJF,
sorry if you have done this already, but have you tried to 'repair disk permissions' in Disk Utility? A mac expert friend of mine says it's always worth doing that after any new software/hardware is installed as on rare occasions it can sort out a minor glitch?

Spooky. This was what it said:

I'll let you know if it improves much. Thanks, iconix.
If there are any boffins out there who can see anything else in the above log that might mean I've got a horrible problem (like unwelcome guests on my machine), please PM me. What a great site.
Edited to say that the system log still shows this type of problem:

Hi
Have you tried running anything to see if there is another network broadasting in the same frequency as your wireless - try using something to graphically show you the wireless networks in your location, such as istumbler
http://www.istumbler.net/
Can be useful to show if one of your neighbours is on the same part of the Wireless spectrum Must stop buying shiny toys....

darrind,
I know iStumbler. You're spot on. One of my neighbours is using the same channel/frequency. I'd move away to another channel but my router is fixed to Channel 6 and I can't change it. I think that's a router thing, nothing to do with the iMac. (As it happens, the two networks were there in the past; it's my current machine that seems to have real trouble with the conflict.) I'm now thinking of buying a new router, so that I can move channels.

| Quick way to test the problem |
|
Hi NJF
if you wan to test that the problem will disappear without getting another router and then sending it back if it doesnt fix the problem you can set up an Ad Hock wireless network between your iMac and another wireless device then once you are working (using a different channel to 6) set a ping test (using Network utility) running between the two devices and just leave it running for a while to see if you are getting consistent traffic from both devices
BTW the permissions issues dont look serious, I guess you do not leave your mac running all the time without a sleep or hibernation, the mac runs Unix chron scripts to generally tidy the permissions early in the morning.
A good bit of software to allow you to run these yourself, whilst also cleaning loads of other caches is called onyx - it sorts permission repairs and lots of other things. http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs/english.html
Make sure you do a complete backup with time machine before you run it or any other system type tinkering tools though.
Just in case!!

Apple has released an AirPort Extreme update 2008-4 in the past couple of days. It didn't seem to have a positive effect.
Anyway, I worked out that if I switched off the "Super G with Dynamic Turbo" feature on the D-Link wireless router, I could change from Channel 6 to another channel where there's less interference. Apparently I'll sacrifice speed, but the wireless was faster than the line to the ISP, so there's no real penalty to pay and hopefully I'll be able to get away from the annoying need to toggle AirPort off/on every 5 minutes.
So far, so good. Keeping calm.

After two weeks' connection without interruption, the problems are back, as bad as ever. The Apple forums show many people with the same problems.
My advice is do not buy the new iMac if you want to use wireless internet. It's an utter lemon.
