A friend of ours had one of these and had a really bad accident in 2005 when she was 4 months pregnant. 2 people in other cars were killed even though she took the brunt of the impact. She had bruising and a broken wrist and went on to have the baby when it was due 5 months later. The car undoubtedly saved her life so....
We had one new in March 2006 and sold it last year as the family outgrew it. Had a 2.0D SE when the SE was the top of the range rather than these SE Lux etc that are out now. Car was absolutely brilliant and she loved it. Very comfortable, very well built and held its value very well. Would have no qualms in recommending it to you. Just avoid the 2.4i petrol which is thirsty and underpowered.

My brother ran a V50 2.0 SE Sport until recently and he loved the car, never had any major problem with it,
He only changed it a few months ago as the V50 D5 R-Design came out with the manual gear box and they threw him a great offer on both the part ex and the car been discounted too. The deals were that good he bought his wife a C30 R-Design aswell.
the V50 D5 makes a great sound when your foot is a little heavy too

On the plus side it's very well put together, high quality material inside and evidently rather reliable. Avoiding the base 1.6 and 1.8 petrol engines, the D5 is pick of the bunch and held in high regard. It's still very attractive and was freshened at the beginning of the year to fit in with the current Volvo line up.
Obviously, safety is top notch and the dealer network seems to be good. The standard warranty is still 3 years or 60k miles (I think?) but they're good for a hell of a lot more than 60k.
Dimensionally it's not massive (for a Volvo certainly) and the boot/rear seats lack some space. Unless you're fairly large you wont find head/shoulder room a problem.
We had an S40 for a while (the saloon version of the same vehicle) and it was extremely comfortable and nicely refined.
Go for the SE over the S, for not a lot more you get leather, electric seats and all the gizmos DISCO3's Student Correspondent...
