TD5 OBDII Tuning

I've been asked the following by a D2 TD5 owner, and my gut reaction is to tell him that he is talking pants and to leave well alone. He also tells me that the D3 is a facelifted TD5 so I'm dying to get one over on him here. Rolling Eyes

His question is:
__________________________
I've just got a dedicated OBD11 Code reader for my Disco TD5 that interfaces with a laptop. With it I can read and clear fault codes, monitor hundreds of parameters and code fuel injectors to the ECU (etc etc)

I've discovered that I can re-program the flash EEPROM ECU. I've already found about 20 different ECU programs/fuel maps that I could load up, but I can't make head nor tail of the language used and I'd like to understand how to make custom alterations.

Can anyone point me in the direction required to make sense of this sort of stuff?

Whilst I'd love to wade-in and tell him that it's cock-and-bull and the TD5 can't be given 20 different maps etc, I don't want to be wrong (for a change). TFC answer perhaps??? Warm porridge on offer..... Wink

He sounds like hes got a Nanocom, I had one when I had my D2 TD5 and defender TD5, it plugs into the OBD11 port and can indeed read faults etc, and can clear them.

Also can check and set alarms and other useful things, I got fed up at paying LR for resets on various spurious fault clearing so £229 was well spent.

Yes you can remap to a degree, but unless you know what your doing even via a computer/laptop, then I would leave this alone, you could seriously screw your system up.

But there again, let him do it and laugh aloud when hes Censored it up!

D3 is a facelifted D2....really!

sort of right... it can be flashed but only 1 map at a time!
Also the 'flash counter' will only allow up to 8 (I think) reflashes before the ECM is locked - unless you know how to reset the counter
Software wise WinOLS will read the maps and allow alterations BUT you can also screw up the engine as none of the parameters are tagged

The tool also does sound like a Nanocom to me , available with the Nanocom map generator software that gives the user all the standard TD5 software versions in Nanocom format if needed for changine ecus from car to car.

Ive made many files for this tool but Nanocom files are more complex to make over other tool read files, as they use a spacific nanocom chq sum calculation not made by WinOls

Also luckly for the user in this case the tool does not add a flash marker to the history unlike some other tools exactly as 10forcash has said.
Not the best for tuning the TD5 in my opinion due to its reliability in some cases.

I think its a good tool in its own right for basic diagnostics only. Not the best for tuning with saftey in mind.
