JMC - (in semi-serious mode...) I would say that's a pretty good analysis. I share the same view, we are on a ledge. The crunch is starting to hit home with some consumers in some countries. But it depends if the majority start to realise that the good 'ol days of spending on credit are really over. The US House has passed the rescue package - and markets haven't exactly recovered...that should tell people something.
European Banks are now feeling it - Fortis and Dexia are bailed out; Fortis NL is now nationalised; ABN Amro is disappearing (because of Fortis); ING could be next...
Where to put your hard earned dosh...? Back into the market if you are sitting on cash...there's a lot of money to be made out there...And into those things that will always hold their value - antiques, art, gold, property (if carefully chosen) etc.
As for my money, I know exactly where it's gone and will continue to go - mortgage, fuel for the D3, kids pockets, some choice extras for the D3, food, beer, maybe a tune for the D3... The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...

Chocolate. Always sells well in crises. Darling is about to lob £50bn at a load of bankers who, given past experience, will pee it up the wall and pay it to themselves in undeserved bonuses next January. All in the cause of confidence, apparently.
Here's an idea: give it back to the taxpayer instead. That's a few grand for each hard-working individual (we'll even give some to the bankers). And what will we do with it? Spend it, most likely. On cars, food, beer, fuel, paying bills, servicing debt etc. We could even save some of it, in the banks and building societies that are so desperate for our cash. Everyone's a winner: we get some cash to spend; retailers get our cash; the government gets some VAT and duty; the banks get some savings.
Surely this is a better thing for the economy? TDV6 S Auto, Cairns Blue

Don't worry SM...... If this really bottoms out, my (semi protected) savings will be worth the same as the ones you can't get to. Only good for 'kindling' The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom

If, as predicted, the taxpayer is going to have a stake in the banks, can I inform my bank manager to off?

Why would you want to do that?

And he's another corporate manager, who gets replaced every 2 years, and lives in fear of losing his job.

Whilst I feel exactly the same, it would be fair to say that if you took every fat-cat bonus for the past five years and put it into the banking system, it would have the same effect as a small hampsters fart on the global warming issue The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom
