I know its offtopic, but at one point in my career I worked for Prince Al Waleed of Saudi Arabia, and hehad just bought a 6 arctic caravan system where by they all joined up to make a "palace" that he could take out to the dessert when he felt like it - amazing - I'm still in contact with his logistics manager - do you think you could cope Steve if I offer your house as an overnight spot? Yeh, but you have it easy these days....I got my class 1 in '83 when it were all roping and sheeting, no sleeper cabs, no heating, cold winters, dodgy electrics, huge oil consumption, frequent breakdowns usually on the hard shoulder. I could go on...like the day the cab was demolished in Newport on a typicslly grotty welsh day when a guy in his rover 2000 got his false leg stuck on the accelerarato and instead of braking, hit the lights at some speed and ploughed into the cab..."ooh, look at me luvly car" was all he said whilst his wife was comatose on the pavement.

my hat goes out to all the old school truck drivers. Simple as that, doing the same job as I do with a truck equivalent nowadays to a cart horse.
I have a semi auto Mercedes Actros V8, power everything from brakes to evening curtains. built in satnav, microwave, bigger sleeping area thn the bedroom me mam gave me as a kid, aircon, sunroof and tv.
These comforts make the job worthwhile, money is great and within reason not a bad company to work for. PERMANENTLY IN THE SITE NAUGHTY CORNER

I was only in me early twenties at the time...! But it was a tough time, no reliability whatsoever. Always cold winters! However, I remember only abt 10 ish yrs ago we had 20 stobart artics queuing up the day before New Year's Eve outside our work with tinned dog food..but we couldn't unnload them as the yard was 6 inches deep in snow and the stackers couldn't get a grip, so the whole lot went back to Warrington.

You ought to go to Germany if you want to see a good, traditional market.
Trier has quite a good Christmas market and the town is worth a visit. It was a major Roman city and still has a lot of Roman archaeology, including the Dom (cathedral, still in use), the Constantine Basilica (now a Protestant church, still in use and in remarkable condition, but that's due to the major refit needed after a WW2 bombing raid ), the baths and the Porto Nigra, which is the finest example of a Roman city gate outside of Italy. The centre still has a very old German feel about it.
Trier's about 4.25 hours' drive from the tunnel, weather permitting. It's also about 30 minutes from Luxembourg, which is a beautiful fortified city, and a great place to stop for a night. The Christmas market here is much smaller than Trier's but the city is worth a visit, the restaurants are good, and we have the cheapest fuel, tobacco and alcohol in Europe.
On the way home, between Luxembourg/Trier and the Channel, you have the choice of visiting a number of interesting places, including Verdun WW1 battlefield (very sobering place, well worth the detour), Brussels and Bruges (Brugge). If anyone wants to make a long weekend, I'll be happy to recommend some places to stay in Luxembourg and to show you round Verdun, although you'd need a whole day to see it and you might not make the last train through the tunnel.
Other places to consider in Germany might be Monschau, which is a chocolate-box pretty village in the Eiffel region of Germany, near Aachen. It's very beautiful but very small and I haven't been to its Christmas market. Then there's Aachen or Cologne, which certainly have Christmas markets but I don't know them. I hear that Cologne's is good, and you would expect so in a large city.

Now we could maybe make this some kind of mini Christmas Disco3 meet. Recommendation would be Trier as it's a nice, town, has a great atmosphere and market (as NJF says) and would be just at 4 hours from the tunnel.
And here's an idea...
I know an English guy in Luxembourg who is an amateur historian on battlefields (WW1 and WW2) and who gives tours . Good thing is he knows a lot of the out of the way places. If there is enough takers and he is available, it could be arranged to have a tour with him for a day...?
Thoughts ? The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...
