I was wondering after a close encounter with a tourist bus on our small roads , how do you remove the mirror glass from the mirror itself? Is it a special turn and pull job?

If it's just the mirror glass then it's pull. There is a circular mounting plate in the mirror body, and a corresponding semicircular lip on the lower part of the reverse of the mirror glass, with corresponding clip on the upper part of the reverse.
To change the mirror glass I've found it easiest to adjust your mirror inwards as far as it will go. This gives you a large enough gap along the outer edge of the mirror glass to slip in a screwdriver and gently lever the clip off the top of the mounting plate. There are two wires to disconnect (just space connectors) once you've unclipped the glass. You don't have to use the screwdriver, but if you have already smashed the glass the last thing you'll want to be doing is tugging on it and risking broken glass all over the place. Carbon footprint? I neither know nor give a damn
