Can anyone recommend the best aux lead to purchase for connecting my ipod via the aux output behind armrest.

Any gold plated 3.5mm to 3.5mm aux lead will be fine for the job. I better way is to pickup the Aux connection in the passenger footwell and then run the lead into the glovebox no messy cables lying around. You can never have too many toys...

I used a bog standard 3.5 lead I had speare from a PC sub-woofer speaker to the PC. This works fine between iPod and Aux port to allow kids in back to control iPod.
I also have an FM transmitter that I had from my last car which plugs into any cigarette lighter and then you tune the radio into a spare frequency, set this frequency on the transmitter and listen to the iPod through the Radio instead of the Aux port.
The only thing I have noticed differently using this approach is that when connected to the Aux port, the volume control on the ipod works, whereas when over the FM transmitter route, volume is controled solely from the radio.
Personally I prefer the FM transmitter route since otherwise you can end up with the radio set on very loud if the kids have messed with the iPod volume - easy to do using the same wheel, and then when you switch to another radio station or a CD, you get deafened!!

If you are connecting into the aux socket behind the center console then it is worth considering a right angle jack as it sticks out less, and makes the cable fall more vertically, which minimises the risk of it getting bashed and breaking. My 6 yr old managed to accidentally  catch our old cable so many times it eventually broke, so i cut the cable and replaced the supplied jack with one of these.

Evening chaps.
Do all D3's have this Aux input point in the passenger footwell? If so where do I find it please? As I also fancy installing an Ipod but didnt like the idea of using the rear Aux socket.

I got Belkin Mini Stereo Cable For iphone/iPhone 3G -. Its white, nice & flexible and has good quality plugs at each end. About 6 quid

There is volume issue with the 3.5 mm jack on the top of an iPod or iPhone - ie it's not line level, which is what you really need for the AUX input on a D3. You can get a line level output but only through the dock connector on the bottom. Acid test is... if adjusting the volume on the iPod/iPhone while playing through the D3, and it makes a difference to the AUX volume in the car, then you're not connected at line level. The volume control on the iPod should have NO effect when playing properly in the D3. There are some leads which connect to the dock which are still wired to mic level and don't provide any advantage over the 3.5mm jack.
I've bought the AV lead from apple:

This gives you phono leads with Line Level Audio L/R (plus video) and a USB to plug into a USB cigarette adapter to charge at the same time. With a double phono to 3.5mm adapter (from Maplins) I get line level from any iPod/iPhone and can charge in the car while listening - and the whole thing leaves just one dock connecter to connect each time!
(The music even dips when a call comes in allowing the bluetooth to connect)
p.s. mic level (3.5mm jack) will work, just won't be best quality. Paul

Am I missing something, an AUX plug in the passenger footwell???????never seen it, and was down there the other day cos I fitted an external speaker there too.
I got a gold plated APPLE AUX lead, I got it free, but agree with Slimer, why buy a gold one as the connections all need to be gold to benefit
Found the thread, and the connector in footwell PERMANENTLY IN THE SITE NAUGHTY CORNER

no, you need to have the stereo and upper glovebox out to get it installed but it's a doddle, even you are up to it ! and if not half an hour at a friendly fitters' or able Disco3 members gaff should do
