xenon upgrades and OEM globes

My handbook says that the xenon bulbs in my lights are D2S and 55w? I can find plenty of 35w replacements, but not 55w. Is 55w really the spec on the OEM xenon bulbs?
I have just "upgraded" the Cibie S/Oscars with a 35w Xenon kit off e-bay (Aussy supply...chinese origin...) with 6000k colour, which are blue compared to the standard OEM lights, so have also bought some 35w, 6000k D2S globes at 6000k to replace the OEM globes. (just to see,,,no pun intended), LR quote $400.oo per globe, got the pair for $40,oo delivered. I know they won't be Phillips brand or what ever LR supply, but can change globes for 20years with the savings.

Dont know the wattage but Phillips are available from the UK at this website http://www.powerbulbs.com/product_list.asp?cat1=37&cat2=56

I have bought several types of bulbs for our cars and found they generally arrive within a week, and the postage is included in the price and they also have a currency converter so you know what you are paying in AU$.

I was quoted approx $390 each from Autobarn for the D2S so the "Powerbulbs" $142 price is quite a saving here in Oz.

I got the H7 Night breakers from Osram for the Disco as I felt they should be better than the Phillips X-Treme Power H7

Bought some globes off e-bay for $40.oo the pair (35w). The original globes are Phillips branded and are also 35w. So the book is misprinted. Found a local mob who can supply the globes also, but want $150.00 each.Shocked

E-bay is my friend Cool

I haven't had a real chance to compare globe penetration...the new globes are 6000k temp (closer to the blue spectrum), and the originals are ( I believe) 4300K temp.(white with some yellow). Will see how they go.

So how did it go???

Which Seller on Fleabay???

Also was the Cibie kit advettised as a Cibie kit. That makes for a cheap upgrade. Will they work on IPS or Lightforce as well?

Too many questions.

Any light is upgradeable, you just need to know the globe type that your lights take.
In hindsight, I think I would order 5000k colour...less blue, and closer to OEM xenon colour.
Also note that xenons are like flouros at home, they are not instant on like a filament globe, so are not much use for flashing...you'll note that when your lights are off, and use use flash, only the driving lights come on not the main beam.

Other issue for me is mounting the ballast. The leads from the ballast to globe are relatively short, which means the ballasts (for me) are located on the bumper behind the grill...I would prefer to mount inside the engine bay...there are a couple of good locations in there. You could cut the wires and extend by making up some fly leads, but you must have good contacts, and the original wires are double insulated.
Other than that, the kits are plug and play replacement.

Just click on "visit seller's store" there's plenty to choos from...and as for their kit...as good as any out there.

More info:
I changed out my OEM globes for a pair of 6000K units off e-bay. I haven't had much of a chance to compare them, however, last night was the night. And I'ver reverted to the OEM globes. the 6000k globes are bright enough but they lack penetration on low beam because they appear slightly bluer that OEM. I would suggest that if you require replacement xenon D2S globes at any time, you ensure the colour temp is not more than 5000K. This enables the colout to be bright white instead of a white blue.
The upgrade to 6000k on ther Cibies on the oterhand are excellent. I think this is because the standard drivers on high beam help with fill, but switching on / off the Cibies to compare directly against standard hi beam, the amount of light and ability to see clearly is truely amazing. (and I took 2 years to add the drivers, because I thought the standard highs were excellent).

Good advice. I was thinking of doing the same with replacement globes.

Have you tried 4.3K or 5K in the Cibie's. I suspect that would also make a big difference.

there is a limit even for me Smile No I haven't tried the cooler colours in the Cibies, but I agree, 5000k maybe better. I am happy with the 6000K in these lights as they are not subject to shadow by any a screen as the bi xenon OEMs are. I was impressed by the standard 100w halogens in the Cibies, but the xenon upgrade for $100 is well worth it.
Hella make Rallye 4000 OR Predators...same light only the Predators are Xenon specific and cost $1500 each. I have not been able to direct compare, but can't believe a single light is worth 4 times the cost of a pair that a $100 globe kit would equalise???
