tintenter wrote:for those of you with the timer and haveing problems firing up the FBH i found these instructions in a websto manual for resetting the errors to 0 and it worked for me
instructions for resetting the FBH are as follows
press the flame symbol on the timer, wait 3 seconds and pull the 20a fuse, wait 3 secs reinsert the fuse and then press the flame button again wait 3 seconds and pull the fuse again, wait 3 seconds and re insert the fuse the FBH should then fire up as soon as the fuse connects
100% sure that mine isn't working... I've just been out and checked the fuse.. it's ok. But thought I'd have a go at resetting it.
Someone please tell me where the 'flame symbol' is?? The engine bay is splashed with dried mud and I was looking with the aid of a small torch and the outside light, but I couldn't see anything obvious... Cheers! As you slide down the banister of life

Just realised that I missed an important part of Tintenters original post...

I have trawled through a lot of previous threads on the fbh but can't find a definate spec/criteria on when the heater should turn on and off. (Assuming the latest software upgrades).
What I know so far from reading and experience with my own vehicle (guessing that this is working correctly):
1) The fbh will turn on at any temperature under 5 degress C
2) The fbh will turn on at any point with the vehicle unlocked (key in the ignition?) whether engine running or not
3) Th fbh will turn on or off as decided by controlling unit/temperature sensor whil engine running
4) The fbh should turn off when the car is stopped and locked but the coolant pump may continue - for how long?
After having half an inch of snow settle last night the only thing that didn't have snow on was the bonnet of my D3. Last time it was used was 10:30pm. I am hoping the fbh hasn't been running all night while the vehicle has been locked. Although this would explain the 17.8 average mpg read out!!
Please let me know if any of the above are incorrect etc.
Thanks,
John

also, the FBH will NOT turn on with the ATCM switched to 'off' and the vehicle running

the engine coolant temp needs to be below 75degC as well as the ambient temp being below 5degC ...and the cool down cycle is either 100 or 175 secs depending on which load stage it was at at the time 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Wiggs,
No I don't have a timer/remote unit. Yet
I wanted to understand the current standard set up a) to check the correct working of mine and b) to totally understand the advantages of adding the timer.
Mine has come on with just the key in the ignition - the engine hadn't been started. Is this a fault?

Thanks QuantumJohn for clarification, I like you have been a little puzzled by this heater, but now after reading every possible thread i was convinced mine was not working. I booked mine in to the 'stealers' at Doncaster, and after waitin 3 hours I was told it was working fine, apparently it was that hot the mechanic claimed to have burnt his hand on it. guess what - its still not working, I was up in the Dales last week in minus 8, there was more heat coming from my rising anger than the FBH, I have tried every conceivable fix from checking the fuse, filling the fuel tank to the hilt, disconection of the unit to disconnecting the battery, so I guess its another trip down south to Donny !!!!!

quantumjohn wrote:Mine has come on with just the key in the ignition - the engine hadn't been started. Is this a fault? Nope, the FBH will start up providing:-
The ambient temperature is below 5 degrees
The coolant temperature is below 75 degrees
The ignition is on
The fuel level is not low (i.e. not low enough to activate the low fuel warning indicator)
The battery voltage is above 11.25V (from memory, could be different)
The ATCM is not switched to 'off'
There are no fault codes stored in the FBH and no relevant ones stored in the ATCM
The FBH is not locked out

what is the default operation of the blower unit in terms of outlet, is it screen only? would it be worth tapping directly into the blower assembly and just supplying power to that only for when the FBH is on a timer it would circulate the warmer about a bit?

On hi-line ATCM's the vents shut when the engine is switched off, different vent & air mix strategies are used dependent upon solar load, internal temperature, requested temperature, external ambient temperature, coolant temperature and whether rear aircon is fitted / active. In addition, the blower fan is controlled by a -ve PWM signal
