Accommodation Suggestions - Kielder Weekend

I am getting a lot of people asking for information about accommodation...

So here are a few suggestions to tempt people into making a weekend of it:

No Luxuries

Bunkhouse - Bellingham - YHA Owned

Sleeps up to 15 people arranged across 3 bedrooms.

Pricing
From £429 for 2 nights

Address
YHA Bellingham Bunkhouse
Demesne Farm
Bellingham
Hexham
Northumberland
NE48 2BS

To make an enquiry: http://www.escape-to.co.uk/view_property.php?id=38

Even fewer luxuries

Whiteburnshank

Trust owned and we may not fit their ideal user group but it is a quiet time of year so could be worth a look.
It is extremely remote and about 6 miles on unsurfaced roads to get there. One such road has recently been washed out and may not have been repaired yet.

Here I am pondering how to get there:

This place sleeps more than 10 from memory but the last time I stayed there was over a decade ago.

Accommodation was arranged across two rooms.

I can't recommend this palce highly enough. You won't be slumming it, but at the same time don't expect too many luxuries.

The drive to Kielder is either an hour or an hour and a half depending on whether the MoD are firing on the otterburn range or not as there is a road that can be accessed at non-firing times.

No cost option...
Wanehope Mountain Bothy

There is non such thing as a free lunch. But there is a free bed for the night here:

This is a property ran by the Mountain Bothy Association. It is a no frills place but has loads of charm.

There is not normally vehicular access to this property. So anyone contemplating a stay should make sure they leave plenty of time to walk in, get the fire lit and settle down to a night without TV, electricity or running water.

Toilet is by way of the trowel.

If contemplating a stay here please PM me as I may have further information to make this a more attractive location. It is very close to kielder.

No need to book but anyone wishing to stay here should be familiar with the MBA code of conduct / use. More information on this here... http://www.mountainbothies.org.uk/

For exact location and access please PM me.

More to follow when I have time.

For those wanting to take tintent.
All sites at Kielder [& close proximity] are closed for winter.

Closest is Lidalia 'Caravan Club' site in Newcastleton.
Tel 01387 375819
Open all year round
This is on the western edge of Kielder Forest - approx 20 miles to Kielder Water
Best approached from M6.

Thanks to ronp for this information. I don't know the site at Newcastleton but can confirm that the two main Kielder sites are closed.

What about those who may wish to sleep over in their D3.
Is there anywhere suitable for them to park up for the night?

Try the Percy Arms at Otterburn, not to far away about £50 per room. The weather can be severe up at Kielder and the Forestry Commission close the toll road from 22nd Dec.

I'm looking for somewhere cheapish that I can cancel at last minute if necessary under, as loopyles says, the risk of severe weather Confused

Not having driven to this area for some years, what is the drive time from Edinburgh. Routemaster maps says about 2 hours? I may drive down in the morning if thats the case.

Chris, don't worry if you are able to go, some sod will make room for you!
Just keep us posted.
In fact, you could be the official photographer for the day!

John, 2 hours is about right but depending on the time of day you travel (and how heavy your right foot is) you may do it in under that. I'll probably be just over that.

Ron, I'll certainly have all the camera gear with me so if you'd like an on-board photographer... Very Happy

Back of the D3 options...

Leave this one to me...

I have an idea but best not in open forum.

PM me and I'll get you details as soon as arranged with land owner. There will be campfire and goodish facilities.

There are 3 routes into Kielder village:

1. C200 (marked on some maps as Border Forests Road) Western approach - this comes into the village from the Scottish side at Newcastleton
2. C200 Eastern Approach - this is the road most often used by the English on approach from the A69 at Hexham or Belligham
3. Forest Drive - this is a toll road which serves as a tourist attraction. It comes into the village from the A68 in the North. To find it follow the A68 from Otterburn in a westerly direction. You will come to a small settlement call Byrness. It is at about this point that the Forest Drive meets the A68. This shouldn't be considered an option as it is closed during the winter. I may be able to see if an exception can be arranged - but don't count on it. If you are in that area then there are alternative routes that either bring you into Belligham or straight onto the C200.

Hope that helps.
