I have had a look around and cannot find any relavent post so here goes. I have noticed a VERY high pitched sound in the car when it is very quiet outside and in. Something like the high pitched sound that came off of old tv sets at night but quieter. It sounds to me like the fuel pump in the rear but don't let this cloud your jugement as i could be wrong. It stops shortly after the car stops still at junctions and is ticking over but not under load and starts again when you put it back in drive after a short delay if you don't move and straight away if you drive off. As i say it sounds like the pump but only when it has to supply and i wonder if it stops pumping when no load is applied at tick over. Has anyone else noticed any noise like this?

I'm sure that there are lots of faint noises that different people home in on. Mine has a few that I notice, and often wonder what they are. My view is if it is not apparent enough to be reasonably obvious, or if it has got no worse over time then its probably something and nothing.
I have a faint noise that is similar to yours, it is always there when the aircon is on, if I switch to eco, or turn the fans off, it goes away.

Mine makes this type of noise when the ignition is turned on, before the engine is started. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Like Gareth says, we all home in on something; the ultra-high pitched (and very quiet) whine I hear occurs when the air-suspension valves open during re-levelling (and being a pillow smuggler ensures mine has a long drop ). Also, there's a similar yet different whine when the xenon headlights strike.
I'm not sure I've yet heard the in-tank pump on the D3, but can't imagine that it'd shut down; doesn't the fuel keep being circulated to the high pressure pump and the excess returned? Dr. Ian Malcolm:
