Upper tailgate doesn't open |
|
When I try to open the upper tailgate it doesn't open. Not from the outside and also not with the emergency release.
I read a thread but there is mentioned that they can hear the motor operating. I can't hear anything. so it looks like the motor is not even get power.
How can I open the door?
Thanks Roel

You'll need a dealer to fix it so I would not open it until you can get it too them as you might not get it to close again! Cheers

I am not afraid not to be able to close it again. I can always use duck tape or tie it close from the ladder to the towing eye. I need to move my mother so I need the tailgate open. Roel

What do you mean the emergency release? Pressing the lock/unlock buttons on the dash? If that doesn't work, then you have a big problem (even bigger in your case as I'll explain later).
A few people on the Spanish forum have had a fault with the solenoid/actuator being knackered and they're unable to open the tailgate. The only way to fix it is to remove the trim panels from the inside of the tailgate.
The problem with this is that all of the fixing points are hidden when the tailgate is shut, meaning that the dealers need to break the panels to gain access.
To do this they need to get into the boot of the D3 via the back doors.
It's lucky you haven't got a G4 or anything like that with the cargo separator fixed into position...... dohhhhh.....they're probably going to have to cut that apart too
It's a dealer job I'm afraid - not for the difficulty of breaking the panels (if this is the fault), but because the average owner (me included) wouldn't have the balls to physically break them all off their precious D3.
One of the guys that had this problem found that the dealer had fixed it and then made small hole in the lower tailgate so that you can get a screwdriver in there and pop the lock open if it happens again.
I hope this helps - let us know what the dealer says.

If its crucial that you get it open before you can get it to a dealer and assuming your in warrantee then call LRA.

You can get the panels off from the inside without breaking them, I've done it myself. Accidentally built it back up after fitting the rear ladder and didn't reconnect the switch
Managed to get the panels off OK and the wiring loom was accessible. The dealer will sort it

OK....I've just read the Spanish thread again properly and I must have gotten myself in a muddle....
If the upper tailgate is knackered (or you forget to connect the switch ) and you have a cargo separator fitted, they will probably need to cut away the separator to get into the boot area. No need to damage the panels in this area as Andy has said, but it's a pain in the job
If it is the lower tailgate that fails (and it is closed at the time ), then you need to break the panels (or cut sections of them away with a dremmel) to be able to access the mechanism to open the lower tailgate.
I hope this makes more sense 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

I have a carwash place here in Portugal and one of our clients had the same problem with a RRS.. too bad it happened after the car was washed... I went with him to the stealer and they fixed under warranty.. but broke the panel to gain acess, the mechanic said that was the only way..
The good side of it is that i found this forum because of it

Hi Roel,
I had exactly the same problem 6 months ago.
The Soleniod / Actuator connected to to the upper tailgate release had failed.
Dealer fixed under warranty in about 2 hours.
Hope that yours is just still within the warranty period - Good Luck

What I ment with moving my mother, that she is moving house, so I have to transport loads off small and big stuff. I have luck twice in this case because:
Luck 1:I have a G4 and normally has a loadspace divider/ dogguard but I removed it to be able to transport big pieces.
Luck 2: I was going to the D3 to load an antic chest? that is 160 cm long 85 cm wight and 80 high. If that would have been in the D3 I would never be able to get to the rear tailgate from the inside. Roel

My G4 is just over 3 years old so no LR waranty anymore. However I bought it from Nene Overland and thet give 3 months waranty. I had contact with them and they will pay the cost so that's not the biggest issue.
But on monday the house has to be empty so it is a setback if the rear tailgate doesn't open. I will try to open it tonight and see if I can make a temporary fix. Roel

My tailgate failed today. LRA were very good and tried to help over the phone. Technician out in 15 mins. Same as noted that the solenoid has failed. Booked into dealers and they confirmed all the trim to the rear door has to be replaced to get to the solenoid. LUckiliy under warranty.

ACB - can you confirm that you're talking about the lower tailgate as opposed to the larger upper tailgate? Just to confirm what I wrote earlier about having the break the trim if it's the lower one...

Remember that the solenoids/motors for the upper and lower tailgate releases are both in the lower tailgate.
By the way, did you check for a failed fuse? Dr. Ian Malcolm:
"Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."
Transgenic tomato anyone?
