D3 depreciation
Went to the local dealer to look at maybe changing the D3.....until he told me what he would give me for it
I cant belive how much it has lost in 20 months......£18 grand!!!!!!
Probably just gonna hand the keys in when the lease is done and not bothering with any land rover product bar a defender in the future , it just doesnt make any financial sense...my 10 year old 110 is worth just about the same!!!!!!!
So question is...would you be happy to burn a grand a month of your wages for nothing, probably not!
What with service costs being what they are, unless your offroading your D3 and getting max enjoyment out of them, i really cant see the point.
2nd question...how many of you who have recently changed to a new D3 will use them seriously off road?, if not do you wished you had bought a 5 series/A6 instead as being a pure tarmac machine, so many other large estates seem to make better sense.
i know all new cars loose a vast amount, but in the current climate we are getting ripped off more than most...i wish i had kept my old 330 msport and just bought the defender
The D3 did however introduce me to the brand and get me into offroading so for that im gratefull "you cannot teach stupid people to do clever things"

Don't be stupid
As we all know - the D3 is three cars in one - Off Roader Supreme, Exec Cruiser and 7 Seat People Carrier.
My last D3 fullfulled all three fantasticly - if this one only satisfies 2.5 of them - it's still worth it - especially when I've got a 14 month old at 54% of its list price (thats a £1250 per month depreciation before I got it)Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

Totaly agree SN about the 3 cars in 1 but im struggling to get the logic of wrecking a 30k plus motor every weekend...ive done it and i regret it..more wear and tear, annoying rattles etc etc.
Still......it still looks cool even though its costs me a fortune every month but i need to strip it down totaly before handing back.
As i said before IF YOU NeVER TAKE IT OFFROAD..you wont get the enjoyment and loads of other vehicles make better sense as a road machine.
One of the guys at work picked up a 55 plate RS6 avant with 35k on the clock for £13.5k last week...now thats a road tool "you cannot teach stupid people to do clever things"

yes but you're sat with you're ar*e on the floor with no room and an open invitation to collect speeding tickets like confetti (see my other post) - and you should feel guilty about keeping German workers gainfully employed (not that they need it with the ludicrous protection they have) instead of Solihull's finest engineers - yes? So the RS6 Avant has lost - what - 50 grand in 36 months? - that's nearer £1400 per month depreciation.
So if you don't want to suffer mega depreciation, either keep your cars a long time, or buy second-hand.
Love to Bonnie.
cheers

Thing is Cuzzy, we never buy a car as an investment it is probably the most expensive thing we buy but hardly use in a 24 hour period.
Like someone said, when you buy new you'll loose 50% in two years if your lucky, so by a used one. It'll still drop 50% in two years from what you paid by it will be £6k instead of £25k!!!.
The choice is need, want and desire. What drives someone to spend £30k plus on a car when you could pick up a brand new car for under £7k......

I have just bough a '57' plate GS.
I have been scrutinising the market since November 2008. At first I had a trade in a Merc E270cdi on a '52' plate. The trade in price of this vehicle halved from the price I was offered 10 months prior (it was a cracking motor but just wanted something bigger). I passed the vehicle to a family member for the trade in price, and he is made up.
So when I approached Land Rover dealers it was a cash sale. This made no difference at all and the room for negotiation was slim. There would appear to be no rhyme or reason behind prices on the L.R. site, G.S. more expensive than some similar X.S. & S.E. models. Then you phone the dealer to ask if they still hold the vehicle and are told "NO it sold 4 weeks ago".
Suppose what I am trying to say is that in the current economic climate there appears to be no common sense. Dealers take your eyes out on a part exchange, would not appear to have any structure to the pricing, and leave no room for negotiation.
Suppose the most sensible thing is "IF YOU DON'T HAVE TO CHANGE IT - DON'T!"

Unless it's a company car, don't buy new and only keep for 18 months unless you love it so much you won't care about the depreciation... Buy at two years old and keep it for a while.
Have a look a some rep mobiles like the Mondeo (incidentally a fantastic car) to see their %age depreciation over 6 or 12 months.
Just keep it, the depreciation only hits you when you sell it
