Land Rover & torrotrack - Kers & Total Off Road Cont

High-tech transmission specialist Torotrak is working with Jaguar Land Rover. This is old news and was released in March this year.
(See http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2009/03/18/jaguar_land_rover_kers/

I like the quote “What Jaguar-Land Rover intends to do with technology isn't clear at this stage, but fitted to a Land Rover Discovery, it could provide an extra surge for pulling tree stumps up around one's estate. Fitted to an XK-R, it could produce a handy burst of BMW-humbling acceleration.”)

What may be of more interest are two applications of this-

1 – KERS - Torotrak, the same company helped develop the KERS hybrid system that's currently being tested in Formula 1 racing. Although Torotrak uses a mechanical system with a flywheel not the electrical version. As the car brakes, the energy that goes through the IVT is used to spin the flywheel at up to 64,000rpm. When the car accelerates again, that stored kinetic energy is discharged, providing a boost in power and increased energy efficiency (because it reduces the load on the car's engine).

2 - Total Off Road Control – This is a neat application of the of the IVT which replaces the transfer box, saving weight etc. see the following link if you want to know the details

This link is a video clip of the system in use on a test vehicle around the old Leyland test track

Lets start the speculation – What do you think will come out of this? Anything, nothing?
