New(to me) D3 54 Plate SE
Hi all,
Picked up my D3 last week and what a joy, been after one for years and finally got one.
A quick question though, does anyone know what the approx milage is left when the range indicator reaches zero on the dash, always like to know this but dont want to try it at the moment as i have not got a spare fuel cannister at the moment.
thanks

Aha... thats the $64,000 question...
The answer is... depends, sadly. I've only ever pushed it a couple of miels after zero is reached but others have gone much further.
My advice. Don't risk it - when you get down to about 30 fill it up
You'll be surprised how fast it can go from 30 to zero whilst you're not looking Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

don't try it.............its quite dangerous when you end up stranded on the Motorway or in fact any road.
I have to deal with many people who run out of fuel every week. "it says i have xx miles left" well obviously you dont!!!

Thanks DaveVX and SN,just wondered as my old Golf GT could do approxx 50 miles after Zero but from what you say i dont think i will chance it.
I think the order of the day is a fuel cannister.

On another note,is it safe to store a full 1 gallon cannister in the other battery container or is it just to hot in there,I know this sounds like a stupid question but still unfamiliar with D3'sMY 16 Landmark Santorini Black

Brian welcome to the site
Don't take this the wrong way ...but just fill the goddam tank up
It's never a good idea to let your tank run so low ...and it sure is never a good idea to have a gallon of fuel stored near the engine.

Welcome Brian
I have had a can in the second battery tray for 2 years before i fitted a second battery , with no problems .
I would think twice about petrol , but diesel was ok for me .

Thanks DG,
Not taken the wrong way at all,I believe there are 2 trains of thought on this:-
1:-constantly running the tank low will reduce the build up of in the tank as there is such a small amount of in it the fuel filter will take care of it.
2:-the exact opposite,if you keep the tank 1/4-1/2 full all the time then there will be a build up of which is not getting filtered,
Thoughts????
Thanks also for the info Wiggs(or do you prefer Mr wiggs as i have seen on the forum).
I believe you are the man to ask with regards to all things software related, would you mind if i PM you with a few questions.
thanks

I've managed 30+ miles after reading 0 miles on the indicator was cacking myself as it was the dead of night and no service station at hand. Had to do a quick satnav input to find fuel and it took 86 litres so was close.
I hardly ever let mine get below 1/4 tank now for that reason and if you fill at 1/2 to 1/4 then the bill is not as big. Psychological effort to make it seem like a cheap runabout Just means I'm in the forecourt twice as often

Doesn't the fuel pump use the surrounding fuel to keep it cool? If so, running the tank too low may cause the pump to become hotter, perhaps causing premature wear. The Bearded Dragon
Isnt fun seeing how low u dare take the level of fuel But if u breakdown on the motorway after running out of fuel and u havnt got a spare 5lt can and the nice police turn up they can book u and fine u for this, One of my work mates did that in a Car Transporter on the M6 and got booked, might b cause of the size of the truck, but copper said they can do car drivers too.

If you dont have recovery expect a bit of £100 - £150.

on a side note many of the diesel cars I stop with that run out of fuel are a b*gger to restart. They usually have to be primed with a little hand pump thingy in the engine bay.
How easy is the D3 to start after running out of fuel???? Do we have one?
(and dont buy a new Mondeo they are a pain to restart....(one can of easy start later and it just about went))
