Wheel nut question

I bought some 2nd hand black stormer alloys. The previous owner had them on a p38 range rover and gave me the wheel nuts with them. Will these be safe on a d4? I took off one of the nuts on the discovery today and the wheel nut on the d4 is tapered at the end and the ones he gave me are just flat. I tried one of the black nuts on and the threads were the same and it felt lke it tightened properly. I d use the original ones but just think it would look a bit stupid black wheels with silver nuts.

Some might say it will look stupid with black alloys anyway! Laughing

No, P38A nuts are not compatible with the D3/4.

Isn't the diameter of the nut different too, the thread on the studs are the same iirc, but the diameter of the hole in the wheels differ

Guys - dont get confused

The P38 and early L322 used a smaller black sleeve nut, but these are 20" Stormers being fitted, which should use the same wheelnuts as D3/D4, and early D3 wheelnuts were black.

If your D4 wheelbrace fits the nuts you've been given, then thee are OK, if you need to use a smaller size socket, then they are the early L322 sleeve nuts, and are too small for the wheels you've got.

And, the alloys are not located by the end of the nut, but by the flat shoulder.

do they have the same size sleeve (the plain bit) that goes down into the hole as your D4 wheelnuts?
If so, then these are just the black version of your nuts (as per early D3), as these had black nuts.

If they have a much smaller sleeve, then these are L322 wheelsnuts, which also work, but are usually used with pre07 L322 19 and 20" alloys, and not with stormers, which are "really" a RRSport alloy.

Do the black ones you have look like this:

or this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LAND-ROVER-WHEEL...43af0a9467

(sorry, this was the quicket way to post some pics).

either work OK, as its the flat washer part that tightens the wheel onto the hub

Early D3's had black wheelnuts, but rusted, so LR changed to chrome.

The giveway to the correct nuts is the hole on the alloy. If yours need the smaller sleevnut, then your D4 wheelnuts wont fit, as the plain part wont fit down into the wheel, just drop one of you D4 nuts into the alloy and you will tell staright away. If you D4 nuts fit, and the balck nuts you bee given also fit, and the sleeve is the same diameter, then you could use either, it doesnt matter.

The black ones I ve been given look like the nuts in the first link. The end of the nut is straight. The nuts that are fitted at present are the Same as those in the 2nd link with the tapered end. I ll have to find how to post pictures on forum.

OK, they might look like the first ones, but is the plain part of the sleeve (the section below the washer) the same diameter as you D4 wheel nuts. If it is, you can use either the back ones or your D4 ones. The taper on your D4 nuts is only there for when you want to fit the stupid steel spacesaver wheel. It make no difference when fitting alloys, as alloys loacte using the sleev, whereas the steel spare locates using the taper.

No the diameter of d4 wheel nut is slightly bigger that one off p38. Yes they do both fit inside alloy fine.

When you say both fit fine, is one (the D4) as nice fit, and the other a loose fit? (try the fit from the back of the alloy, so that you dont have to worry about the hex section)

Or, if you put the wheel on the hub, and fit the 5 nuts, but not tight, can you rotate the wheel on the hub flange at all. If you've the right nuts, there should be next to no rotational movement.

Use the nuts that give the least movement, as I have said, its the sleeve part that acts as the wheel locator on a LR alloy (in conjunction with the hub flange - see next comment)

Also, if your wheels were on a P38, they should have had spigot rings fitted for them to run properly. Have these been taken out?

The d4 one is a tighter fit. I m just going to try and get black wheel nut covers for originals and forget about the nuts that came with them. No point taking a risk when swmbo and baby son going about in it. Anyone any ideas where to get 22mm black wheel nut covers?
