Engine System Failure - Turbo Control Valve -Update on Codes
After having P08 & P17 recall work carried out last week I have since had two bongs followed by message of engine system failure. They said code referred to a fault in the turbo control valve and that turbo would have to be replaced. I am not so sure. My D3 was in top condition before having service and recall work carried out at local dealers. Now i have lost my confidence in it as am afraid will get the dreaded message followed by total loss of power when overtaking or pulling out of a junction. Code clears when i restart engine.
When challenged, my local dealer admitted that they really did not have the staff with the technical capabilities of replacing the turbo as most of the best seem to have been laid off.
They had a similiar fault on a sport last year and it took them 3 to 4 weeks to change the turbo.
I have asked them to take it in this week to check all software, hoses, etc as i bet there is a simple solution to the problem.
They fitted a modified fuel pump as part of the recall work but did not carry out any check or upgrade of the software. The problem might lie here.
I am not having them rip my D3 apart to change a turbo when they have admitted it would be more of a trial and error job. If they insist on changing the turbo I would much prefer to change for a D4 as would only end up with endless trouble if I let them near it.
Anyone had any similar code and how was it rectified?
Feedback would be great.
Regards,
Terence, D3 1234

Exactly the same last xmas, you get the "i", Engine System fault. No pulling power, cack to overtake etc etc. Defo the Turbo variable vane which means New Turbo I am afraid.
Some dealers have found a way of changing the unit, still a knuckle scuffer, some have not like my dealer at the time that did it the book way and seperated body and chassis.
Not sure of the turbo availability now, but mine did take 3 weeks to source, and 2 weeks of so to fit and assemble.
Cure :, its a known achiles heal, we all care for the D3, and its a sign you are too. The variable vanes soot up and jam through not giving the D3 a caning once and a while. New software was on a upgrade to exercise the vanes on start up sequence too.

Both of my D3s have had new turbos at just over 3 years and 50k miles. Turbos, EPB, EGRs, bushes, compressors, all should be in LR's hall of shame!

Had the same fault back in the summer and the dealer changed the turbo
8 weeks later the same fault again called out LR to my house and the guy loaded the software and have not seen the fault again

You will also get 'Engine System Fault' displayed if fuel pressure is low or an injector is going faulty. Would try changing the fuel filter first
I assume the fault has only been apparent since the HPFP was replaced? I would be tempted to take it back and have the fault codes checked. Low fuel pressure code is P2290.
There are a few other faults that will bring on engine system fault, I listed most of them (related to faulty turbos) in another thread, try a search, see if it brings them up...
One more thing finally, a blocked/burst/delaminating turbo hose will also cause said fault
Lets us know what the specific codes are then go from thereMy D3 Build Thread

So if you don't get the "i" fault display on an 05 does that mean the EGR is stuck open as I'm getting intermittent loss of power but no warning

I experienced a lack of power on a number of occasions in the last few months. Mine's an 05 manual with just under 50k miles on the clock. My 1st thought was an EGR on the way out. Had an opportunity for TFC to run diagnostics but he found no EGR fault codes. He did find an injector imbalance though.
Booked the motor into my local dealer but had to make a trip to France in the meantime. Whilst there, I experienced the 'i' fault and the motor went into limp mode as I passed a string of HGVs on a motorway hill. Managed to get on the hard shoulder, stopped, restarted and the motor ran ok. Didn't over exert the motor in the period until I got it to the dealer this week. Dealer has now replaced No 4 injector.Clubs Mantec, Tasmods, LEDS, AT2s on 18s, Maxxis Bighorns on 17s, Remote FBH, BAS. I thought they had fixed the turbo problems...looks like they will all fail eventually.
Mine started losing power at 3500 rpm, them dropped to 2000 rpm and became impossible to drive.
New (second hand turbo) fixed it.Pete

With turbo problems on the D4, looks like it's in the LR DNA!

just a silly question
if any engine fault problem does not appear again, it is actually stored, so dealer would retreve the info and actual fault code?

Ollram, yes, if there is any fault that has a code relating to it, it would store the code until the code is read and/or cleared.
