Tips on what gears/ratio to use in Snow

Just though we might put something up for all the newbie members who may need a confidence boast to play in the white stuff:

1) Gears/ratio to use when helping pull a fellow motorist up a) slight incline b) obvious incline
2) Gears/ratio on compacted ice (towing and non towing situation)
3) Gears/ratio on compacted snow (towing and non towing situation)
4) Gears/ratio on a combination of compacted ice (towing and non towing situation)

Thumbs Up

Mr G is here to stay for a long while!!! 2" already tonight and due to be snowing more on than off for the next 3 days!!! Big Cry Big Cry

Been out for a fair bit in everything from clear Tarmac to 2ft of snow, and everything in between. Generally been in D, R where forward motion has been reduced to zero!! Used a mix of TR off (clear Tarmac), GGS on slushy & compacted snow and DSC off when going up hills where I know I want to cut through the snow a bit. Usually too busy to think about command shift. So far only got stuck once and got pulled out by an Audi Allroad, learned not to get totally off the road to let him pass! Embarassed Embarassed

I tend to use command shift when slowing/stopping so as to use engine braking as it can be a bit scary in auto on snow Shocked

The hill desent is really impressive in the snow and ice even when towing a good bit of weight.
Command shift is the way forward for normal roads to stop the car running away from you.

Had to tow a Transit out of a ditch, uphill and on snow.
Best I found was, Low range and Rock crawl mode

I agree Lee, been doing exactly that so that the engine is doing the braking not the brakes, keeps the car under control IMHO.

I've been using D to pull away and change up (in GGS mode) so that it changes up sooner than I would probably change up in command shift, but when I need to slow or stop I've been sliding into command shift and dropping cogs.

Had some nasty icey roads here for a while now so had a good chance to play. I have had the TR in grass/snow mode and been using command shift (again mainly for engine breaking approaching junctions) - there's been a couple of decents where I have turned on the hill descent and it's done the job.

Too be honest i didn't really notice how bad the roads were until i took one of our Nissan Patrol based Ambulances out, mistakenly figured it would be as sure footed as the Disco, dumped it in 4 wheel drive mode, off i went and promptly went round the first bend at 90 degrees to the direction i wanted to be going, only when that happens you appreciate how good the D3 is. So far I've pulled neighbors out and even been rescuing there kids that have been trapped at closed schools, lol
