Disco 3 running on red diesel?

Can someone inform me if my disco 3 will run on red diesel and will not make the ECU shut down because of the emissions being different or something. My Disco is used alot for field, greenlaning and livestock work on the farm.

Not sure, but then you can't use it on a public road or a green lane if you have red diesel. It's not worth it for just on the farm as the minute you leave the farm and hit public roads they can dip the tank.

If HMRC catch you on a greenlane (or any other public road) with any trace of red stuff they will take your car and crush it or flog it!

The dye stays around for ages as well, you can't just put a fresh tank in and the dye will be gone.

I have a mate who is a customs officer and he used to Patrol the coast, even they had the kits for testing as red diesel is quite common on the more remote islands of Scotland. It became a bit of a race to see how quickly they could get in and set-up road blocks etc before the jungle drums went round the islands and people stopped driving.

Fines are massive though, definately not worth it if you get caught.

Anyway you should pay you tax like the rest of us!

no they wont.

They may choose to fine you and they aint that huge either. Locally A 'camp' containing white transits was raided locally as they were all running on it, the fines were all less than 1k if memory serves.

It is not illegal to use heating oil / red diesel in your car as long as its on private land.

It's really no different than Spanish trucks driving over here on ultra cheap diesel undercutting UK truckers.

You have to drain the tank then before going on a public road and a green lane is a public road. So in practice, it is illegal unless you never go out on the public roads.

If your car has a tax disc and used on the road, then it's not an option

It's exactly the same as white with the dye added as stated. It also has chemical markers as sophisticated filters are able to remove the dye. All the stuff about dying the tank is a bit of a myth.

If stopped, the Ministry or cops only do a visual check, less than 2% red is pretty much undetectable. 1st offence is painful, 2nd can be crusher time. Shocked

It's not the dye they test for , but a tracer chemical in the diesel called Quinizarin. The dye is just there for easy identification by you and I. This dye can be removed, but the Quinizarin can't.

HM Revenue & customs wrote:

2.2 Can I use rebated heavy oils as fuel in a road vehicle?
No. It is illegal to use these oils (for example, gas oil or kerosene) as fuel in a road vehicle unless you get a licence from us to pay the difference between the full rate of duty on the fuel and the rebated rate actually paid on the fuel used. Section 6 explains how to do this.

2.3 Can any vehicles use rebated heavy oils as road fuel?
Only those which are specifically excluded from the legal definition of ’road vehicle’ may use rebated heavy oil as road fuel. These are known as 'excepted vehicles' and are listed in Section 8. Unless the vehicle is included in that section it counts as a ’road vehicle’ and must use fully duty paid fuel.

top ^
2.4 So all other vehicles must always use fully duty paid fuel?
Yes – both on and off public roads.

it isn't worth it

boat owners round here get their car tanks checked every so often and it is a big fine. Once it has been in the evidence stays around for a long time............

It is not just white diesel with dye in it, some agricultural users and plant hire operators buy the so called Red diesel, but it can be Kerosine or heating oil both of which are red in colour, and different in price also the sulphur content and flash point are different from white road DERV,and both have less lubrication properties over white DERV, and if you dont want to replace the FIP pump, injectors etc don't use it. Ive been told HMRC can fine you upto seven years back tax, on the estimated diesel you have used over that period. Stick with white to be on the safe side Thumbs Up
