smoke getting worse
hi white smoke on tickover getting so bad have to turn engine off in trafic jams....still no positive diagnosis yet....regards derek maunders dpjdisco

Could be the EGR cooling bit leaking, had that with loads of steam whilst car warming up. EGR changed and issue sorted.

hi dsl...thanks for that,,,,already taken EGR pipes off and blanked off and removed butterfly, dont no if i have to do more,i think it is worse....regards derek

@DM their is coolant going to the EGR valves.Thats what Derick (DSL) is talking about. They can leak.

Does the smoke clear whenthe revs pick up ?
Does it use water ?
Does it idle smooth ?

If it is using water as said by many it sounds as though its leaking into the engine from somewhere, possibily the egr as said or at worst one of the head gasketswhich i s not very common admittingly.
In which case the car does need more investigation to find the location.
If it were not using water it would lead me into the cylnders of the engine and to start looking for a possibile compression or rotational force issue, i have had it in the past where a car had at some point sucked water in and compresses one of the connecting rods shortening it by only a few thou which led to a lower compression ratio on that cylinder which causes the smoke from under compressing the injected fuel.
This was also picked up on when making ballacing/rotational force tests while the engine was running.
I think your first port of call is to 100% find out if water from the header tank is going down or not and take it from their, and to make some more investigations arround the egrs int he mean time.
Its also possibile it could be many other things ranging from an injector problem to poor fuel if its not a water issue.

Obvious question but is what is being puffed out smoke or steam?? Could you get someone to rev the car to, say, 2500rpm and you sniff the steam/smoke. I'm assuming that if smoke it will smell of oil or fuel, if steam will not smell of anything. Just a thought and may be way off base, obviously don't do if in garage or when car is in motion!

Many thanks for your response.
I forget to mention that I had it diagnosed the other day, and the unjectors were all reading between 1200 and 1400 all accept for number 2 injector which was reading only 600. I don't know if this tellls you anything

Sounds like the no2 injector then didnt the people who checked it out tell you this .low pressure causes incomplete combustion and hence white smoke.As I suggested in your previous post this fuel then collects in the catalyst so takes a min or two to burn off once the exhaust gets hotter.Get it put right quickly or it may cause other problems.You have a good independant near you if you dont want to use the main dealers.
