Urgent advice needed please! On trying to track down a noisy bearing on the front of the engine, I've just found the belt tensioner pulley wheel almost falling off! When I take the tension off the belt, I can rattle the tensioner pulley wheel around, which is not good ! So I need to get the viscous fan off, but can't work out how to unscrew it. When I try to disconnect it from the water pump pulley, the pump just turns with the rest of the fan. Any help much appreciated! I've got to get it fixed this afternoon, as I need the D3 to get to work (85miles!) at 4am tomorrow Previously:

Don't have all the answer, but have read somewhere that a special spanner is required to allow the fan to be removed.
As I haven't seen one, I don't know if it's a standard but thin type for slots on the shaft, or if it's the type with two pins on it. If its pins, you may be able to bodge something from scraps...
Edit : Perhaps this will help?

Transgenic tomato anyone?
I gave up trying to get the fan off, so managed to remove the tensioner with a ratchet extension through the fan blades. No tensioners in stock nearby, so I've pressed the bearing out the pulley, and am going to buy a new bearing to fit. Standard bearing size, so should be easy to get one today.Previously:

Tensioner fixed with a new bearing, but getting the belt back on with the fan in place nigh on impossible. Can anyone help please?? Once I get the fan off it should be OK, but I don't think it's possible to get the belt on whilst it's still there. Getting desperate now folks Previously:

Special long spanners needed check your mail (or spam again )G4 Gone ...but not forgotten
Thanks for the pdf Wiggs - seeing what LR use allowed me to bodge something similar out of a bike headset spanner. That got the fan off no probs - after 6 hours of trying to get the serpentine belt on through the fan blades it was a great relief. SWMBOs magic touch managed to get the belt on whilst I held back the tensioner.
Test drive good. So, I can confirm it's possible to repair the front ancillary belt tensioner with a 99p bearing (search ebay for 6203-2rs) - a standard size of 40mm outside dia, 17mm internal dia, 12mm thick.

If you quote these sizes, or bearing number at any Brammer depot (ex BSL) they will give you whatever specification you want.
Doesn't matter what the bearing is, wheel etc, take note of those three sizes OD, ID, W and they will give you a replacement the exact same.
Used to do this for many a motorcycle, as the savings are great. we got ripped off price wise, as bearings came in little plastic bag saying Yamaha, Honda etc and thats all you were paying for, the name.
This is something that could be set up as a forum discount if enough people were going to use it, as we had one on the Visordown Bike forum and everyone had access to the discount code.ATB

Sorry I missed this. I made a spanner type thing out of some plate. Just quickly drew the general shape. The two little circles go over the nuts on the pulley. Remember the thread is reverse.

Alan, that's just what I did yesterday and my local Brammer (ex BSL) came up with the goods - although once you have the part number I think ebay are cheaper for SKF bearings. Once I get the pics off my phone I'll post details on how to change the tensioner bearing. I now realise how much noise was coming from that bearing - the engine seems much quieter now, even at idle.Previously:

I simply turned the fan until i could slot a thin, long screw driver underneath one of the four little bolts on it and over the top of the spindle, if you know what i mean. I then put some downward pressure in the opposite direction to which I wanted to turn the nut and used an adjustable spanner over the fan nut to undo it. It came undone with minimal force. Remember it's a reverse thread so it needs to be turned clockwise to undo.Have a nice day!

Thanks Jamo, I did try that method but I think because it's 5 years old and goes wading quite often it had rusted on slightly.Previously:
