Diesel preheater 'steaming'
Hi,
The D3 is my 4th LR of one description or another, and I've still got a 25 year old 110 that I can't part with.
I've had a few niggles with the D3 and with the dealer (Droitwich LR). Yesterday the D3 started to steam / smoke from under the bonnet when stationary and cold. The dealer told my wife this was normal for the D3 and RR fitted with this engine and happened in particular ambient temperatures. He said it was a feature of the diesel preheater. I'm quite used to the normal LR nonsense but this one is pushing the boundaries.
I can't see any similar issue listed on the forum, am I missing something?
Many thanks,
PaulPRH

If it was 5 degrees or less , then perfectly normal
Its the FBH ( fuel burning heater ) ..there is an exhaust comming down the front passenger wheel arch ..but the silencer in the engine bay has 2 small holes in it ...incase your driving through water or the exhaust is blockedG4 Gone ...but not forgotten

Hi there and Welcome, its the FBH - Fuel Burning Heater, the unit sits behind the passenger headlight, and the exhaust is behind the passenger front wheel.
If temperatures hit below a certain temp, think its 4 degrees, the FBH starts to aid warming up

Marvellous. Now I know what to look for I can see it is a 'widely' discussed topic! Only LR could do something like this....PRH
Bloody embarrassing when in town though - every day people think my car is going to explode....

I've had the D3 for a couple of months and we have had some cold weather before yesterday and not noticed anything at all. Would this indicate the FBH hasn't been operational but has just decided to come to life?PRH

Given it was -6 etc. a few weeks back and I didn't see any smoke from the FBH, do you think it just decided to come to life yesterday? It has smoked a bit more today at outside temp of 1.5c.PRH

Noticing the FBH exhaust or not depends on many things such as external temperature, humidity, wind speed, looking in the right place are the most obvious. I dare say others will contribute their observations.
Some of us also get a sort of "jet engine" smell when the FBH is running, again perfectly normal - the FBH has a sort of ram jet combustion chamber.Rob Smith
